    • A tunable intake manifold is provided for directing a flow of air between a plenum and an internal combustion engine. The tunable intake manifold has a manifold housing having an inlet aperture, an outlet channel defining a fixed outlet port, and a runner wall extending from the inlet aperture to the outlet channel. A slider is mounted in the housing for sliding and reciprocating movement. The slider cooperates with the inlet aperture to define a variably sized inlet port. The slider also cooperates with the runner wall to define a runner extending between the inlet port and the outlet port. A drive assembly operatively connects with the slider providing the reciprocating movement to vary the size of the inlet port. The outlet port extends at an angle relative to the inlet port. The slider has an outlet portion extending at the same angle relative to an inlet portion. The outlet portion slides along the outlet channel presenting a smooth transition between the variably sized inlet port and the fixed outlet port.

    • A compact high inertia engine intake system is described for an internal combustion engine achieving near optimum breathing over most of the engine's speed range even with fixed valve timing. The internal combustion engine has two or more cylinders with individually tuned intake pipes to each cylinder, characterised in that each pipe carries one or more interconnecting ports and valve means for whose operation permits air flow between the ports. Preferably two or more intake pipes are brought together to form a cluster which houses the valve means which may be integrated to form a single valve within the cluster. The intake pipes for out of phase cylinders act as a plenum for the intake pipe in the induction phase when the valve means is open. Pairs of intake pipes can share a single throttle valve adapted to provide an uninterrupted passage along the pipe when fully open. In a preferred embodiment the valve means opens in two stages, the first stage connects together only the intake pipes whose induction phases do not overlap, and the second stage connects all the pipes in the cluster together.
