    • An underwater diving light has a rotatable front filter ring for selecting light filtration as needed for underwater still or video photography conditions. The filter ring is removable and interchangeable with different rings. Another important feature is efficient cooling of the LEDs and other internal electronics of the diving light assembly. The water is in contact with a metallic front face that conducts heat directly away from a metal core circuit board carrying the LED array or arrays. In one form of the diving light water channels are provided so that the ambient water can enter the assembly to spaces behind the LCD circuit board to efficiently cool the LEDs and associated electronics. The front plate assembly can be removable, for rinsing the internal cooling cavities, for interchange with different front face assemblies, and for air travel when the LCDs must be removed from driving electronics for safety concerns.

    • A planar sample, particularly of the type used in biological laboratories for detection and sometimes analysis of two-dimensional arrays of proteins, nucleic acids, or other biological species, is illuminated by epi-illumination using optically filtered line lights that are arranged along opposing parallel sides of a rectangle in which the sample array resides, with two coaxial line lights on each side of the rectangle, and the two on any given side being separated by a gap whose optimal width depends on the wavelength band transmitted by the optical filter. Surprisingly, the gap eliminates the peak in intensity at the center of the sample area and the decrease that occurs from the center outward that would otherwise occur with a single continuous filtered line light, producing instead a substantially uniform intensity along the direction parallel to the line lights.

    • An omnidirectional (360°) light is provided comprising a fixed, unidirectional light source (29) (including IR and UV sources as well as visible light) providing a unidirectional incident light beam (36) incident upon two or more, oppositely directed reflective surfaces (22,24) on a rotatable reflector (18) and inclined to the incident beam, preferably at 45°, to provide two or more reflected beams, directed radially away from the axis of rotation of the reflector and radially spaced one from the other at preferably 180°. Four or more reflective surfaces may be used to provide, for example, four reflected beams at 90° to each other. The reflector (18) is rotatable at high speed about the axis of rotation by a motor to cause the reflected beams each to sweep a 360° arc about the axis of rotation, the speed of rotation being such that the light appears continuous.
