    • An active inceptor apparatus and method for operating a machine. The apparatus comprises a stick member having a grip portion, the stick member being pivotably mounted relative to a housing. It further comprises a position sensor responsive to, and for generating signals indicative of, stick member position. A force sensor is provided on the stick member responsive to, and for generating signals indicative of, force applied to the stick by a user. The apparatus also includes a control unit operable to receive the position and force signals from the position and force sensors respectively. The control unit is operable to process the signals according to a predetermined relationship to determine a value FD indicative of force applied to the stick member relative to displacement of the stick member. The control unit is also operable to generate machine control signals as a function of position signals and force signals in dependence upon the value FD, for communication to the machine.

    • A mechanism for effecting both coarse and fine adjustment or positioning of an element includes a fine resolution positioner comprising a longitudinally extending shaft having two threaded sections of different pitch. Threadably received on one of the threaded sections is a coarse range selector which is mounted for free rotative motion on a seat in a support plate. An adjusting member is threadably received on the other threaded section of the fine resolution positioner. Coarse adjustment or positioning is accomplished by turning the coarse range selector, resulting in longitudinal movement of either the selector or the adjusting member along the fine resolution positioner. Fine adjustment or positioning is accomplished by turning the fine resolution positioner which results in its turning in both the coarse range selector and adjusting member to effect displacement of both along the fine resolution positioner. The relative displacement between the two is a function of the difference in the pitches of the two threaded sections of the fine resolution positioner on which they are respectively received.

    • A carriage and rail assembly for a high-resolution mechanical positioner suitable for application to apparatus such as optical benches, inspection fixtures, machine tools and photography fixtures for effecting extreme position accuracy and resolution with low friction. The mechanical positioner may include an adjustable top plate or slide block mounted in parallel relation with respect to a baseplate or carriage block by means of mounting rods. Carriage rods or tracks extend perpendicular to the mounting rods and are fixed at opposite ends in flanges which project at right angles to opposite end portions of the baseplate or carriage block, while additional positioning rods or tracks are fixed at opposite ends in flanges which project at right angles to opposite end portions of the adjustable slide block. An actuating member by means of bushings or antifriction bearings is slidably mounted on the respective carriage and positioning rods in an arrangement in which the actuating member is mechanically coupled to the slide block through the positioning rods which are inclined in a predetermined angular relation to the carriage rods so that a horizontal positioning of the actuating member effects a vertical adjustment of the position of the slide block relative to the carriage block. The ratio of the horizontal adjustment of the actuating member relative to the vertical adjustment of the slide block is dependent upon the predetermined inclined angular relation of the positioning rods to the carriage rods in an arrangement such that the slide block may be adjusted with extreme position accuracy, resolution and with low friction.
