    • A magnetic recording medium which can be recorded with binary data at high linear bit densities has at least two coextensive, continguous magnetizable layers of differing coercivity (Hc) which have been selected so that, when recorded with binary data, the trailing f-t-e profiles that separate adjacent binary cells are straighter and closer to being perpendicular to the magnetizable surface of the medium than are the trailing f-t-e profiles of either of the magnetizable layers alone. Typically the coercivity of the outer layer is less than, but at least one-half the coercivity of the adjacent inner layer. The outer layer should be thin enough to minimize the spacing between the head and the inner layer, and the coercivity of the outer layer is high enough to afford stable recording, preferably from 500 to 2000 Oe.

    • A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate and formed thereon a magnetic layer comprising a binder and ferromagnetic particles dispersed therein, characterized in that the binder comprises a polyurethane resin (1) obtained by polymerizing at least one diol compound having a cyclic structure and a long alkyl chain with at least one diisocyanate compound. Examples of the polyurethane resin include: one containing diol units derived from a dimer diol and an aliphatic diol having a medium-length branched alkyl chain; one obtained from a polyether polyol having a cyclic structure; and one obtained from a polyester polyol formed from a dibasic acid ingredient comprising an aliphatic dibasic acid, a diol ingredient comprising an aliphatic diol having no cyclic structure having a branched alkyl chain, and a chain extender comprising an aliphatic diol having a branched alkyl chain.
