    • A laser atom probe situates a counter electrode between a specimen mount and a detector, and provides a laser having its beam aligned to illuminate the specimen through the aperture of the counter electrode. The detector, specimen mount, and/or the counter electrode may be charged to some boost voltage to charge the specimen to near the level required for it to emit ions toward the detector, and the laser may then be pulsed to bring the specimen to ionization. The timing of the laser pulses may be used to determine ion departure times, and the times of arrival and charges of the ions may be determined at the detector, with these parameters allowing determination of the mass-to-charge ratios of the ions (and thus the identities of,their constituent atoms). Because the laser is located distantly from the specimen, difficulties can arise in keeping the laser beam aligned to precise locations of the specimen, and automated alignment methods are described wherein the laser is automatically (or semiautomatically) directed to areas of interest.
