    • An large machining apparatus 100 for working a substantially planar workpiece such as a metal plate 1a in relation to which a set of work actions such as machining grooves and holes is required at one of a number of work zones on or in the workpiecela, the apparatus 100 including: a working assembly such as a drop down drill 9 movably mounted on a beam 2,3 for reciprocal linear movement along a first horizontal axis extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece 1a; and an assembly rail 10 movably mounted on the beam 2,3 at right angles to the beam 2,3 to carry the working assembly 9. The apparatus 100 further includes: an immobilizing base 14 mounted on said rail 10 for reciprocal linear movement along said assembly rail 10 in the direction of a second axis and a clamping base 23 mounted on said immobilizing base 14 and adapted to be clamped onto said workpiece 1a to locate said working assembly 9 at a predetermined one of said work zones; and a movable base 22 mounted on the assembly rail 10 for limited reciprocal linear displacement along the assembly rail 10 in the direction of the second axis relative to the immobilizing base 14 The working assembly 9 is mounted on the movable base 22 to enable limited linear displacement of the working assembly 9 in the second axis direction in the predetermined work zone.
