    • A surgical, tubular-shafted instrument comprises a shaft, an operating rod mounted for displacement in the shaft, a handle part for actuating the operating rod and a connector that detachably connects the handle part to the shaft. The shaft is secured in an axial direction in an inner sleeve of the handle by a locking member that is displaceable radially in the inner sleeve and dips into a recess of the shaft. The radial outward movement of the locking member is limited by a stop element that is displaced into a position releasing the radial outward movement of the locking member. A holding element fixes the stop element in a release position and can be acted upon by the shaft to release the stop element due to displacement of the shaft in the inner sleeve. The holding element is guided for displacement in the handle part outside the inner sleeve.

    • A surgical instrument and method for facilitating the capture of objects during surgery are provided. The surgical instrument comprises a flexible tube having a proximal tube end and a distal tube end, the flexible tube defining a cable passageway and being configured for insertion of at least a distal portion of the flexible tube into a body cavity of a patient. The surgical instrument further comprises a flexible cable having a proximal cable end and a distal cable end. At least a portion of the flexible cable is slidably disposed in the cable passageway. A snare loop having a loop member is attached to the distal cable end. The snare loop and the cable are adapted so that the snare loop can be selectively retracted within the cable passageway by sliding the flexible cable proximally within the cable passageway. The snare loop and the cable are also adapted so that at least a portion of the snare loop can be selectively extended from the distal tube end by sliding the flexible cable distally within the cable passageway. The loop member is adapted for selectively encircling and engaging at least a portion of an object in the body cavity. The system also comprises a steering tether having a proximal tether end and a distal tether end. The distal tether end is attached to the loop member so that application of a tensile force to the proximal tether end causes the snare loop to deform in a predetermined manner, thereby facilitating a maneuvering of the snare loop.

    • A diskectomy instrument includes an elongate body, a blade and a drive stem. The elongate body has a distal end, a proximal end, and a blade opening proximate the distal end. The blade is removably and movably mounted within the elongate body proximate the blade opening. The blade has a distal end, a proximal end, a sharp edge, a ramped portion and a stem mating portion. The drive stem is movably mounted within the elongate body and has a distal end, a proximal end and a blade mating portion. The drive stem is configured to slidably engage the blade when the drive stem is moved distally thereby extending the at least one blade radially outward though the at least one blade opening. The blade mating portion is configured to cooperatively engage the stem mating portion of the blade when the drive stem is moved proximally thereby retracting the blade.

    • Disclosed is a single-use surgical scalpel having two molded plastic elements, and a surgical blade. The first molded plastic element is a housing. The housing has an upper and a lower radiused edge, and ribbed interior wall surfaces. The ribbed interior wall surfaces of the molded plastic housing define a channel for slidable engagement of the second molded plastic element which is referred to as a blade carrier. The channel has one open end through which a surgical blade is extended during use, a slot through the lower radiused edge for slidable engagement of an actuator/locking fin, a single-use indicator window, and a retaining element for engaging a distal end of a leaf spring. The molded plastic blade carrier has a first end adapted for engaging the surgical blade, a second end having a leaf spring to assist in blade retraction, the leaf spring having a proximal and a distal end, and a central portion having the actuator/locking fin and a single-use indicator. A single-mold embodiment is also disclosed.
