    • A crusher includes a replaceable first crushing member having a first crusher surface and a replaceable second crushing member having a second crusher surface. The co-operation of the crusher surfaces is defined by at least one crusher setting parameter. From measurements of a quality parameter, which relates to the nature of the crushed material, on at least two different occasions during the service life of a set of replaceable first and second crushing members and on each occasion for at least two different settings of the crusher setting parameter, a control function can be determined that describes a value, of the at least one crusher setting parameter, which on a given occasion gives a crushed material the quality parameter of which is substantially optimal. The control function is utilized for the adjustment of the crusher setting parameter for a subsequent set of replaceable first and second crushing members in such a way that on a given occasion for the subsequent set of replaceable crushing members, a crushed material is also obtained, the quality parameter of which is substantially optimal.

    • An improved design for hammermills. The invention contains a centered rotor from which eight rows of hammers pulverize material against cutting plates inside a working chamber. The cutting plates have slots that are angled. The hammers may have a beveled, angled leading edge. Both the angled cutting plate slots and the angled hammer leading edges work to drive the material through the working chamber in a helical fashion, with a preferred travel profile of 450 degrees, but the helix length is adjustable depending on the specific needs. There are no perforated screens in the hammermill, thus the material is placed in an inlet, is urged through the hammermill by the action of the rotating hammers where the material is comminuted and then removed via an exit. The communitive efficiency and particle size may be affected by the following adjustable elements: The clearance distance between the hammer tips and the cutting plate; the degree of angle of the cutting plate slots, the degree of angle of the hammers' leading edges; the density and pattern of the cutting plate slots; the speed of rotation of the hammers; and the length of helical travel of the material within the working chamber. The invention further provides a discharge assist by allowing one set of hammers to be non-beveled so that the material is swept along. A second discharge assist embodiment provides that the last section of the helix is smooth to increase the particle speed at the outlet.

    • Apparatus for collecting and discharging waste material comprises peripheral rows of teeth arranged on rotatable cylindrical shafts. The teeth on each shaft intercalate so that an entrapment zone for waste material is formed thereat during contra-wise rotation of the shafts. The teeth in each row pass through respective slits formed between the blade edges of rectilinear scaper blades placed between the rows and resting on the shaft. The scraper blades remove waste material from and between the teeth for discharge from the machine. To prevent the waste material being caught by cutting action between the leading faces of the teeth passing the scraper blades edges the magnitude of the angle formed at any time between those leading faces and the blades edges as the teeth pass through slits, has a value determined by the shape of the leading faces of the teeth and blade edges of the scraper blades so that the inducement of frictional engagement in relation to the materials being handled is never sufficient for a biting or cutting action to ensue.

    • A machine for comminuting bulk objects such as wood or the like includes a receptor forming in its lower part, a funnel, a guide means at the inner side of the funnel, a comminuting device below the funnel, and a transport and pre-breaking means within the funnel and rotating therein with the comminuting device. The comminuting device includes a rotor rotatable about a vertical axis and having a plurality of cutting edges and at least one stator mounted on the funnel and also having cutting edges. The cutting edges of the rotor traverse an annular working plane which is perpendicular to the rotational axis of the rotor with the annular working plane overlapping with the cutting edges of the stator. The rotor cutting edges, when viewed from the top and in the rotational direction of the rotor, are arranged at distances behind each other and in the back of free spaces extending along their lengths, the length of the cutting edges of the rotor being graduated and increasing in a direction opposite to the rotational direction of the rotor and up to the width of the annular working plane.
