    • 298,540. Royal Typewriter Co., Inc., (Assignees of Handley, G. P.). Oct. 10, 1927, [Convention date]. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-In a two-colour vibrator mechanism for typewriters having a shiftable carriage, an actuator for the vibrator is mounted to shift with the carriage and is formed with an arm having two faces for co-operating alternatively with an operating-member which is supported at one end from the framework, the mechanism being so arranged that whether the black or red stripe is employed, the throw of the vibrator is not affected by shifting the carriage, and the vibrator is started at the same point in the stroke of the keys. In the mechanism shown in the Figure the vibrator L is carried by an actuator or lever 2 which is pivoted at 3 to the carriage bed B and is normally held by a spring 5 in contact with an adjustable stop 7. An arm 8 on the lever is formed with faces a, b for engaging a pin 16 on an actuating-member or link 9 which is connected by a link 11 to an arm 13 on a shaft 14 mounted on the carriage bed. The link 9 is connected to a rocking arm R which is mounted on the framework A and is connected by a link P to an arm 0 rocked by the universal bar M. The Figure shows the carriage in normal position and the mechanism adjusted for employment of the black stripe, the pin 16 co-operating with the face a. To employ the red stripe, the shaft 14 is rocked to raise the link 9 and thereby cause the pin 16 to co-operate with the face b. When the carriage is shifted, the lever 2 and the inner end of the link 9 are raised and the pin 16 recedes slightly from the pivot 3, the increased inclination of the link so compensating for the change in position of the pin relatively to the face a or b that the throw of the vibrator is not affected. The pin 16 has slight lost-motion engagement with the face a or b. the lost motion being uniform for both positions of the carriage and both adjustments of the mechanism so that the vibrator is always started at the same point in the stroke of the keys. Overthrow of the vibrator is prevented by means of a stop 15 secured to the shaft 14 and having faces d, e for engaging the lever 2 when the black and red stripes respectively are employed. The vibrator is silenced for stencilling by turning the shaft 14 to raise the end c of the arm 8 out of the path of the pin 16. The pin may have a clearance flat 17.
