    • A transparency, e.g. a laminated windshield has a pair of spaced bus bars on an electric conductive member e.g. an electric conductive coating on a glass sheet. The perimeter of the coating is spaced from the peripheral edge of the sheet to provide a non-conductive strip. Ends the bus bars extend into the non-conductive strip to minimize/eliminate hot spots at the end portions of the bus bars. An additional feature to reduce hot spots includes bus bars having different lengths with portions of the coating between the bus bars not extending beyond the ends of the longer bus bar. In another, the windshield has a vision area, a bus bar between the top edge of the coating and the top edge of the vision area and a bus bar between the bottom edge of the coating and bottom edge of the vision area.

    • A heater for heating air in an intake passage of an internal combustion engine. The heater includes a heating element coupled to a first holder and a second holder. The heating element has a preselected resistance corresponding to plurality apertures formed therethrough. A second embodiment includes a heating element positioned within a housing. The heating element includes a plurality of selectively removable slugs. After removal of one or more of the slugs, the electrical resistance of the heating element increases.

    • A power plant includes a gas turbine coupled to an electric generator. The electric generator can be connected to a high-voltage network through a generator switch and can be operated as a motor for the start-up of the gas turbine. The electric generator can also be connected to a static starting device for the run-up of the gas turbine. The static starting device is connected to a medium-voltage network which is provided for the auxiliary service of the power plant. The auxiliary voltage, provided in another way, of the medium-voltage network, produces a variable supply voltage for the generator operated as a motor. In such a plant, reduced circuit complexity is achieved by the fact that the static starting device is designed in such a way or can be activated in such a way that, after the run-up of the gas turbine, the static starting device itself produces the auxiliary voltage of the medium-voltage network from the voltage delivered by the generator.

    • In accordance with the present invention, a cartridge-style heater received into a bore in an engine block is provided with a quick-release retaining member that attaches to the heater about its outer circumference. A pair of spaced legs and an arm extending from a center portion define the retaining member. The pair of legs frictionally engage the heater while permitting heater to rotate within the bore relative to the member even if the member is fixed to the engine. The rotation also permits the retaining member to rotate about the sleeve to align the retaining member to a predetermined attachment location on the engine independent of the orientation of the heater within the engine bore. This invention provides flexibility in the orientation of the heater to receive an electrical connector from an external power supply and attachment of the heater to the engine regardless of the engine configuration or vehicle model, thereby improving installation, serviceability, and use of the heater.
