    • 1414187 Multi-stage graft copolymer-thermoplastic polymer composition ROHM & HAAS CO 30 Oct 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 49869/72 Headings C3P and C3G A composition comprises (1) 10 to 96% of a thermoplastic polymer containing at least 50% of (C 1-4 ) alkyl methacrylates, styrene, substituted styrene, acrylonitrile, substituted acrylonitrile the balance, if any, being other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, and (2) 90 to 4% of a multi-stage sequentially-produced aqueous emulsion graft polymer having (A) a non-elastomeric first stage polymer having a glass transistion temperature (+g) greater than 25‹ C. and produced from at least 70% of a monomer as defined in (1) above, 0 to 30% of other mono-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, 0 to 10% of a polyfunctional cross-linking monomer and 0À05 to 5% of a graft-linking monomer (B) an intermediate, elastomeric stage polymer having, alone, a +g below or equal to 25‹ C., and produced from 50 to 99À9% of butadiene, a substituted butadiene on a (C 1-8 ) alkyl acrylate, 0 to 49À9% of a further monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, 0 to 5% of a polyfunctional cross-linking monomer and 0À05 to 5% of a graft-linking monomer and (C) a final stage polymer having a +g greater than 25‹ C. and produced from at least one of the monomers specified under (1) above. The compositions may be obtained by simple blending of the dry polymers or their aqueous emulsions or by polymerizing the monomers to form polymer (1) in the presence of preformed (2). Further stages may be included in polymer (2). In the examples, polymers (1) are polymethylmethacrylate, methylmethacrylate / ethylacrylate copolymer, polystyrene, methylmethacrylate/styrene copolymer, styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer, methylmethacrylate/styrene/ acrylonitrile or ethyl acrylate terpolymer, and a methylmethacrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer, while polymers (2) are prepared from (A) methyl methacrylate, styrene, diallyl maleate, allyl methacrylate, 1,3-butylene-glycol dimethacrylate, acrylonitrile, and alpha methyl styrene, in various combinations thereof (B) butyl-, 2-ethyl hexyl- and isobutyl acrylate, butadiene, allyl methacrylate, diallyl maleate, butylene glycol diacrylate and styrene, in various combinations thereof always including at least one elastomer forming-monomer and at least one of the allyl esters, and (C) methyl methacrylate, styrene, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, and alphamethylstyrene in various combinations thereof. Most of the blends are formed by mixing emulsions of preformed polymers or the dry polymers on a roll mill, but in Examples 19 and 20 methyl methacrylate is polymerized to form polymer (1) in the presence of t-butyl peroxypivalate and azobis-isobutyronitrile and the preformed polymer (2) in bulk between metal sheets and under pressure. Intermediate, further stages exemplified are methyl methacrylate/ allyl methacrylate, styrene/allyl methacrylate// butylacrylate/allyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate/styrene or alphamethyl styrene/ allyl methacrylate//butyl acrylate/allyl methacrylate. Comparative examples of two-stage copolymer compositions are given. Numerous preparations of the multi-stage polymers (2) in emulsion with up to 5 stages and up to 4 monomers in each stage are exemplified.

    • 1377412 Low gloss aqueous coating compositions EASTMAN KODAK CO 9 March 1972 [10 March 1971] 10980/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] An aqueous coating composition for producing low gloss abrasion resistant coatings comprises (a) water; (b) dissolved therein, at least 2À5 wt. per cent of an ammonium salt of at least one copolymer of ethyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid having an intrinsic viscosity at 25‹ C. of at least 0À2 and (c) dispersed throughout the water in the form of a latex, polyvinyl acetate of molecular weight at least 50,000, the amount of water present being at least 50 wt. per cent and the weight ratio of (b) to (c) being from 1 : 1 to 6 : 1. The amount of polyvinyl acetate is preferably at least 2 wt. per cent. The total of (b) and (c) is preferably up to 30 wt. per cent. A plastieizer such as dibutyl phthalate may also be present. Substrates which may be coated are glass, polyethylene terephthalate, photographic paints and transparencies, the coating being applied such that the dried article has a coating of at least 0À25 lb. per 100 sq. ft. of a blend of (b) and (c).

    • 1328835 Vinyl acetate polymer dispersions and their preparation VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 16 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969(2) 9 July 1970(2)] 59764/70 Heading C3P Aqueous polymer dispersions are prepared by polymerizing in aqueous medium using a redox initiator system, 70 to 95% by weight of vinyl acetate with 5 to 30% by weight of ethyl acrylate and/or a vinyl ester of a C 3-20 carboxylic acid, in the presence of an emulsifier comprising (1) an aromatic hydroxy compound containing C 6-20 straight or branched alkyl group, which has been reacted with 2-8 moles of ethylene or propylene oxide per mole of compound, and then sulphonated, and (2) an alkylated aromatic hydroxy compound as in (1), which has been reacted with 1-40 moles of ethylene or propylene oxide per mole of compound, and/or (3) a compound of the general formula in which a = 2-40, b = 6-35, and c = 2-40. The monomer mixture may additionally contain up to 5% by weight of vinyl sulphonic acid or styrene sulphonic acid or a salt thereof. Vinyl esters of C 3-20 carboxylic acids specified, are vinyl propionate, butyrate, caproate and laurate. The monomer mixture preferably comprises 80-90% by wt. of vinyl acetate and 10-20% by wt. of ethyl acrylate and/or the other vinyl ester. The aromatic hydroxy compound in emulsifiers I and II is preferably a phenol or naphthol. The emulsifier system preferably comprises 5-95% by weight of (I), and 0-95% by weight of (II) and/or 0-95% by wt. of (III), the total being 100%. The redox initiator system may contain ammonium or an alkali metal peroxydisulphate as oxidizing agent, with ammonium or an alkali metal bisulphite, sodium dithionite or ascorbic acid as reducing agent. The dispersions are used to make coating compositions by admixing pigments such as kaolin, china clay, stain white, TiO 2 , BaSO 4 and CaCO 3 , and binders such as hydrolysed starch, casein and polyvinyl alcohol. Other usual additives may also be added.
