    • The invention relates to an axial piston engine with a casing (1), the inside of which contains a leakage chamber (37) and an eccentric disc (3) and a rotatably fitted cylinder drum (6) with cylinders (26,28) and pistons (29) reciprocating therein, the ends of which projecting from the cylinders (26, 28) are supported on the eccentric disc (3). To prevent the cylinders from seizing while maintaining the efficiency of the axial piston engine, the invention provides for a cooling circuit (7.1 to 7.4) which comprises a leakage fluid catchment chamber (25) connected to the leakage chamber (37) and formed in the part of the cylinder drum (6) surrounded by the cylinders (26, 28); inlet and outlet channels (40, 41), at least one radial component of which runs through the cylinder drum (6); and cooling regions (43, 44, 46) running around the cylinders (26, 28), which are connected to the leakage fluid catchment chamber (25) and open via the outlet channels (41) into the leakage chamber (37) at an outer limiting surface (42) of the cylinder drum (6).

    • An axial piston pump or motor comprising a housing (10) defining a cavity (13) and a drive shaft (14) having a portion thereof rotatably mounted in the housing (10) and extending into the cavity (13). The cavity (13) has an open end remote from the drive shaft (14) and a valve block (12) closes the open end of the housing (10). A removable rotating group cartridge (16) is positioned in the cavity (13) between the valve block (12) and drivingly engaged with the shaft (14). The cartridge (16) comprises a valve plate (21) engaging the valve block (12) and an angle block (22), a rotatable cylinder barrel (25) interposed between said valve plate (21) and said angle block (22) in abutment with the valve plate (21) and in driving relation with the drive shaft (14). The cylinder barrel (25) has a plurality of piston cylinders (26), each of which has a port for communicating the cylinders with a valve face (21a) of the valve plate (21), a a piston (27) in each cylinder, shoes (29) connected to the pistons (27) and engaging an inclined surface (23) on the angle block (22). The valve plate (21) and angle block (22) are interconnected to form a removable cartridge (16).

    • A fluid device (pump or motor) comprises a case (111) having a closed chamber (114), a rotating element (116) mounted for rotation within the closed chamber, a reciprocating piston (123) drivingly connected to the rotating element such that rotation of the rotating element corresponds to reciprocating movement of the piston, passages for admitting and discharging fluid to and from a cylinder in which the piston reciprocates, and scavenger pump means (170) drivingly connected to the rotating element and operable to pump fluid out of the closed chamber at a rate greater than the rate at which fluid leaks or otherwise is metered into the interior chamber, thereby to maintain the level of fluid within the closed chamber below a predetermined level.
