    • An electrical variable optical attenuator (10) of the present invention has a housing (1), a cover (2), an attenuating means (3), an optical module (4), an electrical driving element (5), an input fiber (87) and an output fiber (86). The attenuating means includes a carrier (30) having a guide groove (301) and an inner screw (302). A filter (32) is fixed on the carrier. The optical module includes a guide pole (41). The electrical driving element has a screw rod (552), which couples with the inner screw. The attenuating means is assembled inside the optical module with the guide pole being received in the guide groove to confine the direction of movement of the carrier along the screw rod, thus helping to avoid trembling of the filter when the screw rod is rotated.

    • A gas blocking device is used in an optical fiber repeater or other device to prevent the passage of gas, for example, to prevent nitrogen from escaping from a pressurized housing through a fiber holding tube or pigtail. The gas blocking device includes a fiber containing body, a fiber organizing insert, and a locking member securing the insert to one end of the body. The fiber containing body is attached to one end of the fiber holding tube. The fibers extend from the fiber holding tube through a passageway in the body, and each of the fibers extends through a fiber receiving hole in the fiber organizing insert. The insert engages the body such that the insert is prevented from rotating with respect to the body and the fibers are protected against microbending and other damage. A material, such as hot melt glue, fills at least a portion of the body and surrounds the fibers to block the gas from entering the fiber holding tube.

    • An optical depolarizer includes a non-reciprocal combination-device, a birefringent block, and a reflector. The non-reciprocal combination-device has a principal direction and includes a first birefringent wedge, a second birefringent wedge, and a non-reciprocal rotating element. The non-reciprocal rotating element can be a Faraday rotator. The birefringent block is optically coupled to the second birefringent wedge. The reflector is optically coupled to the birefringent block. The optical depolarizer can include a lens that is optically coupled to the first wedge. The optical depolarizer can include a capillary for holding at least a PM optical fiber and an output optical fiber.

    • A fiber optic cable suitable for blowing into and through ducts containing pressurized gas, such as natural gas, has the fibers therein arranged in arrays that form longitudinally extending vents. The vents are blocked from transmission of any gas by each being filled with a compliant member which assumes the cross-sectional shape of the vents thereby blocking it. In a second embodiment of the invention, the first and third ferrules are fixed within the housing with their offset bores in alignment. A second ferrule is interposed between the first and third ferrules and is mounted in a rotatable member for misaligning the bore in the second ferrule with the bores in the first and third ferrule to produce attenuation of a signal passing through the ferrules by misaligning the fibers contained in the bores.
