    • An improved plain old telephone service (POTS) line card that may be directly connected to a customer line that is also connected to a digital subscriber line access module. A second order filter is added to the front end of the POTS line card in order to attenuate XDSL signals and to lower its amplitude. A new digital signal processor (DSP) includes further low pass filtering functions, gain compensation, termination impedance compensation and balance network compensation to provide the proper balanced network as is known in current POTS cards but not provided in current XDSL services. This card may also be used alone, without a XDSL equipped line.

    • An intelligent voice response (IVR) unit coupled to a public switched telephone network provides predetermined services to a user according to an IVR menu having navigational paths to the predetermined services. The user provides selection signals to the IVR unit via a corresponding telephone call in the public switched telephone network to access the predetermined services. A navigator database stores menu definitions of respective navigational paths and is responsive to a request from the user to provide a digital representation of at least one of the navigational paths. The request identifies a desired navigational path, a desired format for the digital representation, and a destination for delivering the digital representation. An electronic delivery system transmits the digital representation in the desired format to the destination independently of the telephone call.

    • A method of designing an interface system that allows users to map the representation of their task directly to the interface. There are three major phases to the Customer-Centric Approach to Interface Design (C-CAID). End-users' tasks are categorized to determine the frequency of reasons or tasks of why users interact with a particular system. These reasons and their relative frequencies are used to design interface options that emphasize the user's task categories. Finally, the customer-centric interface designs are evaluated and compared with existing system interfaces using usability tests with actual users performing the tasks. The results from usability tests are used to pinpoint the task-option combinations that do not work well and which should be revised. Benefits of this customer-centric design are improved systems performance and increased user satisfaction.

    • A PC (10) connected to a low-voltage electricity supply system (9) via a mains plug (11) and a mains socket outlet (12), into which the said plug is plugged, exchanges messages with other apparatuses via the said electricity supply system by means of signals whose frequency is between 1 MHz and 40 MHz. In order to suppress high-frequency interference signals which are generated by further apparatuses which are connected to the low-voltage electricity supply system (9) via mains plugs (11′) and further mains socket outlets (12′), arranged in local proximity to the said mains socket outlet (12), or which are produced by reflections of signals at open line ends, an adapter (1) is in each case interposed there, which adapter is plugged into the mains socket outlet (12′) and into which adapter the mains plug (11′) of the respective apparatus is plugged. The adapter (1) connects each pin of the mains plug (11′) to a socket of the mains socket outlet (12′), inductor coils which block signals in the frequency range of the message transmission being situated, however, in the phase conductor and in the neutral conductor of the adapter (1).
