    • In order to reproduce the audio signal which has been recorded as an FM audio signal in the slanted tracks of a recording medium in tape form by means of read/write heads (2, 3) arranged on a rotating head drum (1), it is possible to use PLL circuits which are designed as FM demodulators (31, 32) and in each case form a phase-locked loop with a VCO. FM demodulators (31, 32) of this type generally operate satisfactorily e.g. in video recorders with improved audio signal recording, but there is the risk of the frequency of the VCO of the respective FM demodulator (31, 32) drifting when the read/write head (2, 3) assigned to it leaves the wrap-around region of the recording medium on the head drum 1 and only being able to be synchronized with the FM audio signal when the said head re-enters the recording medium.
      According to the invention, each FM demodulator (31, 32) is supplied with the FM audio signal even when the read/write head (2, 3) assigned to it leaves the wrap-around region of the recording medium on the head drum 1, by the respective FM demodulator (31, 32) being fed the audio signal which is read by the respective other read/write head (2, 3).

    • In a digital information recording and reproducing apparatus of a rotary magnetic head type for selecting and recording a plurality of digital information signals having different transmission rates and for selectively reproducing the recorded signal, a high-rate digital information signal (S1) and a low-rate digital information signal (S2) are inputted for selection of either one thereof to be converted by a recording-system encoder (30) into two channels of recording signals (SR1, SR2). When recording the high-rate signal (S1), the rotary drum (50) is turned at a rotation speed (R1) and the magnetic tape (60) is fed at a feed speed (V1) to conduct 4-track azimuth recording of the signals for each rotation of the rotary drum by the first to fourth magnetic heads (51, 52, 53, 54). To record the low-rate signal (S1), the rotary drum (50) is turned at a rotation speed (R2) substantially equal to the first rotation speed (R1) and the magnetic tape (60) is fed at a feed speed (V2) almost equal to (V1/N) so as to achieve 4-track azimuth recording of record signals (SR1, SR2) compressed on a time axis to 1/N of the original signals for every N rotations of the rotary drum (50) by the magnetic heads (51, 52, 53, 54). A reproducing system receives two channels of signals (SP1, SP2) reproduced by the first to fourth magnetic heads (51, 52, 53, 54) and conducts for the signals such processes reverse to those of the encoding process of the recording system as the equalization, demodulation, error correction, and deinterleaving processes, thereby attaining the original digital information signals.
