    • A facsimile device (102) (also called a fax machine), having programmable autodial capabilities, which automatically generates legible telephone directory labels (120). The fax machine (102) of the present invention has a window (116) for displaying the telephone directory label (120) and a memory (114) for storing programmed telephone numbers and names. The fax machine (102) also has a port (126) which is connected to a printer (106). To automatically generate the telephone directory label (120), the fax machine (102) accesses the memory (114) for the programmed telephone numbers and names. Then, the fax machine (102) causes the printer (106) to print the telephone directory label (120) by sending commands and the programmed telephone numbers and names to the printer (106).

    • Disclosed is a switch that allows a peripheral device (106), such as a PCL printer, to be shared by multiple computer systems (102, 108). The switch (116) connects to each of the computer systems (102, 108), and also to the peripheral device (106) being shared. The first system (102) is considered the primary user of the peripheral device (106), so when the second system (108) requests access to the peripheral device (106), the switch (116) causes the peripheral device (106) to save its state temporarily while the second system uses the device. When the second system's (108) use is complete, the switch (116) causes the peripheral device (106) to restore its state to the last state established by the first system. Therefore, the first system (102) need not know that the other system used the peripheral device (106), since the state of the peripheral device (106) appears unchanged from the last time the first system (102) used the device.

    • Disclosed is a switch (104) that allows a peripheral device (106), such as a PCL printer, to be shared by multiple computer systems (102, 108). The switch (104) connects to each of the computer systems (102, 108), and also to the peripheral device (106) being shared. When the second of the two systems (108) requests access to the peripheral device (106), the switch (104) causes the peripheral device (106) to save its state temporarily while the second system (108) uses the device. The second system (108) prints graphics data on the printer (106), and scales the data as it is being printed. In one embodiment, for each line being printed, the system saves the printer state, sends the line of graphics to the printer (106), scales and prints the graphics, and restores the printer state. In another embodiment, all lines of graphics data are sent to the printer (106), then a command is sent to save the printer state, print all the lines, and restore the printer state.

    • An imaging system for applying separate color tonemaps comprises an optical scanning assembly (10) configured to scan an object (12) and produce a plurality of separate groups of image data, each of which corresponds to a different color characteristic. A memory device (68) associated with the imaging system stores a plurality of look-up tables (70, 72, 74), each of which corresponds to a predetermined transfer function. An image data processor (46) operatively associated with the memory device (68) and the optical scanning assembly (10) produces corresponding groups of transformed image data by applying selected ones of the plurality of separate groups of image data to selected ones of the plurality of look-up tables (70, 72, 74).
