In the developing step, the gap holding member is brought into contact with, and disposed on, the protective layer side surface of the photoreceptor so as to go through an electrified region thereof and the specified gap between the protective layer side surface of the photoreceptor and the developing roll surface is held. The photoreceptor contains the cured matter having a crosslinking structure in the surface layer of the photoreceptor and contains 3 to 30 pts.wt. silicon compound particulates of 5 to 500 nm in average diameter of the primary particles on the basis of the total solid content in the surface layer. The toners are polymerized toners and the photoreceptor is electrostatically charged by a contact electrostatic charging method in the electrostatic charging stage.
