    • An air conditioner is provided to enhance energy efficiency with a variable capacity compressor whose compression capacity is modified by load demand, by compressing refrigerant within one or more compression spaces. An air conditioner comprises at least one or more variable capacity compressors out of a plurality of compressors, wherein the variable capacity compressor has a plurality internal compression spaces(340',360') and a selectively variable capacity according to load demand. The variable capacity compressor comprises a casing(310), an electromotive mechanism(330), a compression mechanism(340,360), a vane(348,366), and a vane control unit(320). The casing contours an external appearance, having internal compression space. The electromotive mechanism rotates inside the casing to generate torque. The compression mechanism receives the torque from the lower side of the electromotive mechanism to compress refrigerant. The vane, provided inside the compression mechanism, divides a suction chamber from a compression chamber. The vane control unit supports the vane by supplying suction pressure or discharge pressure to a backside of the vane, while supplying discharge pressure to a lateral side of the vane, constrains or releases the vane by pressure difference supplied on the backside and lateral side of the vane, and allows the vane to make press-contact with a rolling piston(346,365) which compresses refrigerant, or to be spaced from the rolling piston.
