    • An information recording/reproducing apparatus which allows freer utilization of data compressed under different data compression schemes. When data recorded on a magneto-optical disc of an MD under the ATRAC compression scheme is converted into that of the ATRAC3 compression scheme and re-recorded on the magneto-optical disc, selector switches are changed over in a predetermined combination. The data recorded under the ATRAC compression scheme is read and demodulated by a signal processing unit. The demodulation data is decoded into linear PCM data by a data expansion decoder. The linear PCM data is converted into data of the ATRAC3 compression scheme by a data compression encoder. The resultant is modulated by the signal processing unit and re-recorded on the magneto-optical disc. Here, the track numbers of the data originally recorded under the ATRAC compression scheme are kept unchanged, and associated with the data which is converted and recorded under the ATRAC3 compression scheme. UTOC data thereof is recorded on the MD.

    • In the context of a DVD-RAM read-type architecture in which an optical storage medium (20) makes use of an eccentric wobble (164) to attain synchronisation information, a wobble PLL (179) is held in an acquired state whenever header regions (32, 33) embossed at regular intervals across the optical storage medium (20) are detected. More specifically, large dc variations associated with voltage spikes caused by header regions (32, 33) are scaled (260) relative to a dynamically varying amplitude envelope of the extracted wobble signal (164), such as to identify a start location (300) for each header region. The wobble PLL (179) is effectively allowed to free-run and hold state during periods of header, thereby mitigating the likelihood that the wobble PLL will loose lock during the header regions. Also, with suspension of the wobble PLL triggered by a first spike (300), a counter is initiated to over-sample wobble clock periods to pre-empt a successive header and such that the PLL can be disabled immediately prior to the successive header region. Use of a bandpass filter (156) to extract the wobble signal (164) benefits from generation of a spike at each transition of the header dc level, which spike can be used as a definitive marker for a header region.

    • An optical disc device of the present invention obtains a reproduction quality that is independent of a mark distortion by receiving a signal that is obtained from an A/D converter for digitizing a reproduction signal of an optical disc medium and an offset correction means for performing offset correction, accurately measuring a mark distortion factor in a mark pattern having a long recording width by means of a mark distortion factor measuring means, and selecting one of output signals from a PRML signal processing means and a level judge binarization means by means of a digital data demodulation selection means by utilizing the measured mark distortion factor as a judgement criterion, to be used as a demodulation binary signal.
