    • A trimming potentiometer comprising a base with a flange extending perpendicular to it and a cover that encloses the flange and is sealed to the base. Supported on the flange is an assembly comprising a post, a non-conductive plate on which an arcuate resistive path is disposed, a contact plate with a contact finger that presses against the resistive element, and a gear journaled on the shaft and releasably coupled to the plate to move the finger along the arcuate resistive path. The shaft, the plate and finger, and the gear are joined together, and a spring is provided to force the plate into engagement with the gear. The cover has a lead screw mounted in it with a head available to the outside and the threaded portion in mesh with the gear. The axial direction of the screw may be either perpendicular to the base or parallel with it.

    • An adjustable potentiometer of the square-trim-type comprising a case having a compartment formed therein and which is closed by a cover extending thereover. An arcuate resistance element is positioned in the case compartment and has a central post extending upwardly therethrough from the bottom of the case. A circular electrical collector means is operatively rotatably mounted on the post and has a wiper element thereon which is in movable electrical contact with the resistance element. A first lead extends into the potentiometer case and extends upwardly through the post. The collector is rotatably mounted on the upper end of the first lead and includes means for preventing the upward movement of the collector with respect to the resistance element. The collector has spaced-apart teeth which are in threadable engagement with an elongated lead screw rotatably extending into the case. The collector is of flexible construction to permit the deflection or ratcheting of the threads with respect to the threads of the lead screw when the wiper reaches the limits of its travel to prevent damage to the unit. Second and third leads extend into the case and are operatively connected to the ends of the resistance element.

    • A trimming potentiometer including a housing having top and bottom sections. The bottom section houses a gear which has on one of its flat surfaces a laterally disposed cam for engagement with a matching cam on one surface of a contact drum which also fits within the housing. The drum has on its reverse surface an electrical contact pressed against an arcuate-shaped resistance element housed within the top section and having each of its ends connected to a conductive terminal. The gear is driven by a worm rotatably mounted in the bottom section. Rotation of the worm drives the gear, which rotates the drum, causing the electrical contact to sweep across the arcuate-shaped resistance element. The drum has a stop that engages abutment edges on the housing to limit rotation of the drum so that the electrical contact will not go beyond the arcuate limit of the resistance element, usually 270* or so. If rotation of the screw is continued after the stop engages the abutment edges at either end of the range of rotation, the gear and screw are forced out of engagement with each other by camming action between the cam on the gear and the matching cam on the drum to prevent destruction of either the gear section or the thread surface of the worm. Within the bottom section is positioned a gear spring which will flex when the gear is forced out of position against it, but will keep the gear otherwise engaged with the screw. The drum is generally circular in shape and large enough to have one of its sides ordinarily pressed against a shoulder at the bottom section. Since the drum will rotate with the gear, unless otherwise provided, the drum will encounter large frictional forces when turning against the shoulder of the section. To reduce friction a wave spring is provided between the drum and the section shoulder.
