    • A laser printer is disclosed which is adapted to be used for color imaging. The printer comprises three diode lasers, each of which emits at a different wavelength. Each laser beam is passed through an apodizing mask to trim the final spot size. The beams from the three lasers are combined by the use of dichroic mirrors to form one combined beam. The combined beam is shaped by two spherical mirrors and is scanned onto a receiving medium by a polygon. The receiving medium is sensitive to the infrared, and the diode lasers are selected to obtain the widest possible spectral separation in the light beams from the lasers.

    • A facsimile apparatus for copying a document is described. The apparatus includes an optical system comprising a light source for illuminating a document and a fixed mirror and a lens for guiding the light from the light source reflected by the document. A line sensor converts the light-guided by the optical system into an electrical image signal. An electrostatic recording mechanism including a photosensitive body forms an image corresponding to the light entered onto the photosensitive body on a recording medium. A movable mirror selectively images the light guided by the fixed mirror and the lens onto one of the line sensor and the photosensitive body. A control system switches the position of the movable mirror such that the light guided by the fixed mirror and the lens is imaged onto the photosensitive body when the document is copied and is imaged onto the line sensor when the document is transmitted. In another embodiment, the light reflected by the document passes through the lens and is entered into the line sensor by a half mirror. The remaining light is entered onto the photosensitive body. According to the present invention, the image on the document is entered directly onto the photosensitive body, thereby improving the quality of the copied image.

    • An optical scanning device (14) receives information from a page (11) of printed text (12) via an electrooptical transducer (16) and uses that information to fill a bit map in a memory device (102). In order to track the location of the optical scanner relative to the printed page, thus facilitating entry of information into the bit map, an optical mouse (19) is included in the scanner. In accordance with another embodiment of this invention, two optical mice (19, 150) are provided on the scanner (148) to indicate not only the position of the scanner relative to the page but also the angle that the scanner is held at relative to the page. The scanner can be used in conjunction with an optical character recognition device, a photocopying device, or any of a number of other devices. In accordance with another embodiment of this invention, indicia of location (210) are placed either on a transparent sheet or a mechanical constraint (200). A set of sensors (208) on an optical scanner (202) are adapted to sense this indicia but the sensors are spaced differently from the indicia, therefore indicating movement with very fine resolution.
