    • Near-end equipment for a communication channel with far-end equipment. The near-end equipment includes at least one loudspeaker, at least two microphones, a beamformer, and an echo canceller. The communication channel may be in one of a number of communication states including Near-End Only state, Far-End Only state, and Double-Talk state. In one embodiment, when the echo canceller determines that the communication channel is in either the Far-End Only state or the Double-Talk state, the beamformer is configured to generate a nearfield beampattern signal that directs a null towards a loudspeaker. When the echo canceller detects the Near-End Only state, the beamformer is configured to generate a farfield beampattern signal that optimizes reception of acoustic signals from the near-end audio source. Using different beamformer processing for different communication states allows echo cancellation processing to be more successful at reducing echo in the signal transmitted to the far-end equipment.

    • In one embodiment, an algorithm dynamically selects a method for reducing distortion in a multi-carrier modulated signal, such as an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. The algorithm directs a transmitter to transmit peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR)-reduction signals over reserved tones (i.e., frequencies) if reserved tones are available. If reserved tones are not available, then the algorithm directs the transmitter to transmit PAPR-reduction symbols over free tones if free tones are available. If the free tones for this transmitter are used by adjacent transmitters, then interference-reduction techniques may be used to reduce interference with the adjacent transmitters. If reserved tones and free tones are not available, then the transmitter may use an alternative method to reduce distortion, such as successive clipping and filtering. In another embodiment, the transmitter may transmit PAPR-reduction symbols over both free and reserved tones, if available.

    • In one embodiment, the invention is a method for performing preamble detection in a wireless communication network. The method performs a first dwell, wherein non-overlapping chunks of received data are processed to generate partial correlation values for each possible combination of a signature code and delay. Candidate selection is performed by comparing each of the partial correlation values to a candidate-selection threshold. For each detected candidate, the chunks of received data are processed to generate full correlation values. Each full correlation value is then compared to a preamble-detection threshold to detect a transmitted signature. Generating full correlation values for only the selected candidates reduces the computation complexity over prior-art methods that generate full correlation values for all signatures at all delays.

    • In one embodiment, a non-linear power amplifier generates an amplified output signal based on a pre-distorted signal generated by a digital pre-distorter based on an input signal. A feedback path generates a feedback waveform based on the amplified output signal. The feedback waveform is aligned in time with the input signal at the waveform level to identify a corresponding reference waveform. The feedback waveform and the corresponding reference waveform are both divided into a plurality of sub-waveforms. Each feedback sub-waveform is independently aligned in phase with its corresponding reference sub-waveform. The resulting plurality of phase-aligned feedback sub-waveforms are then combined to form a hybrid-aligned waveform that is compared to the reference waveform to adaptively update the digital pre-distorter.
