    • Ambiguity (e.g., confusion) associated with access point identifiers may be resolved by querying candidate target access points and/or by using historical records indicative of one or more access points that the access point has previously accessed. For example, messages may be sent to access points that are assigned the same identifier to cause the access points to monitor for a signal from an access terminal that received the identifier from a target access point. The target access point may then be identified based on any responses that indicate that a signal was received from the access terminal. In some aspects the access points subject to being queried may be selected using a tiered priority. In addition, it may be determined based on prior handoffs of a given access terminal that when that access terminal reports a given identifier, the access terminal usually ends up being handed-off to a particular access point. Accordingly, a mapping may be maintained for that access terminal that maps the identifier to that access point so that the mapping may be used to resolve any future confusion associated with the use of that identifier by that access terminal.

    • An access terminal defines a search window based on a distance between access points. Here, a first one of the access points may comprise a macro access point from which the access terminal acquires timing. The search window may be used to monitor for pilot signals from a second one of the access points. For example, the second access point may comprise a femto node that provides relatively small area coverage. In some aspects the definition of the search window may involve adjusting (e.g., advancing) a center of a search window based on the distance between the access points. In addition, the access terminal may employ a smaller search window when it is searching for pilot signals from a femto node as compared to when it is searching for pilot signals from a macro access point.

    • A method for managing access to a macro mobile operator core network (250) by a guest terminal device (225) through a femto cell (210), and more particularly through a femto cell (210) connected to the Internet (240). When a guest terminal seeks guest access to network services at a site for example while a guest at a person's home, or a customer in a shop, or a traveler in a transportation station, access may be granted by information exchange between the proprietor of the site and the macro mobile operator core network (250).     • System and method are provided for redirecting a communication device between a macro network and a femtocell network using a service redirection message (SRDM). In an embodiment, the communication device registers with the network which then determines the subscription status of the communication device to a femtocell network. If the subscription is confirmed, using the SRDM the system redirects the communication device to a communication frequency used by the femtocell network. Upon receipt of the SRDM, the communication devices tunes to a communication frequency specified in the SRDM. The system may segregate the CDMA channels used by the macro network, one set containing channels exclusive to the macro network and the other containing channel or channels used by both the macro network and the femtocell network. In this way, the communication device is prevented from entering a frequency re-hashing loop.

    • Identification of an access point to which an access terminal is to be handed-off involves, in some aspects, identifying one access point of a set of access points that may have been detected by an access terminal. For example, an access terminal may receive a signal having an identified characteristic (e.g., a particular phase offset) from an access point. Each access point of a set of access points associated with the identified characteristic may be directed to attempt to decode a signal from the access terminal. The access point of the candidate set to use for the handoff operation may then be determined based on the signal received from the access terminal, if any, by each of the candidate access points.
