    • A region management method for an information recording medium capable of maintaining data interchangeability among devices and preventing malfunction when one information recording medium shared among devices different in type or number of file systems that can be interpreted by devices is provided. A recording region of the information recording medium is divided into a plurality of regions, and region information such as position and size of each region is held in the information recording medium. Different file systems are constructed in individual data recording regions.     • A cryptographic apparatus reads, from a portable storage medium, content data and cryptographic information specifying a certain part of the content data on which cryptographic processing is to be performed, specifies the certain part in the read content data based on the read cryptographic information, and performs one of encryption and decryption on the certain part. When, for example, the content data is formed from alternating headers and variable-length data sections, the cryptographic information is a program formed from an instruction sequence. The instruction sequence has the cryptographic apparatus detect a header in the content data, read the length of the variable-length data, and perform cryptographic processing on a part of the content data between a start point and an end point, the start point being a position relative to the header position, and the end point being a value resulting from adding the length to the start point.

    • A Just-In-Time compiler is provided for use with a virtual machine that executes a virtual machine instruction sequence under the control of a real machine. The compiler converts parts of the virtual machine instruction sequence into the real machine instruction sequence before execution and includes a block start information unit that determines whether the encoded block start information indicates a corresponding virtual machine instruction would correspond to the start of a basic block if the virtual machine instruction sequence was divided into basic blocks. A converting unit converts the virtual machine instructions into real machine instruction sequences and an outputting unit rearranges the real machine instruction sequences from the converting unit into basic blocks in accordance with the block start information. Additionally, the compiler can be enabled by a program stored on a computer readable recording medium.
