    • To scan a long line of printed information, a fiber-optic lineto-rectangle converter is configured at one end to divide a long scan line into a plurality of shorter segments which are arranged at the opposite end to form an array composed of consecutive segments stacked in parallel. Since the array covers an area instead of a line, a video camera tube scanning the array utilizes more of its useable face area thus improving image resolution for the converted line. To operate a helical bar printer having as many hammers as line segments in the converter, the rectangular image is scanned with a series of horizontal sweeps orthogonal to the line segments. With each sweep, the hammers are fired simultaneously in response to video signals indicative of the light level at corresponding positions in each line segment.

    • A system for converting infrared radiation in the 8-14 micron region to a real time visual image is disclosed. A lens system focuses the image at an image plane. A plurality of mirrors are disposed between the lens system and the image plane and are rotated about an axis intersecting the optical axis at the entrance pupil. Each mirror is disposed to focus an arcuate segment of the image onto a linear array of detectors located substantially on the axis of rotation as the mirror moves through the optical field of view. The image thus scanned is reconstituted at the target of a vidicon type television camera by the same type of system having mirrors rotated in synchronism with the scanning mirrors, but utilizing light emitters rather than light detectors. The video signal from the television camera is then displayed on a conventional television display tube for visual observation.

    • A method and apparatus for eliminating multiple images in an airborne optical scanner which occur because of the widening of the scan path as the scanning beam moves from directly underneath the aircraft toward the horizon on either side of the aircraft, and which causes blurring or loss of resolution for the images falling within two or more scans. The problem is overcome by placing selected apertures in the paths of beams of light modulated by information from associated scanners, so as to restrict to a minimum overlap the paths traced by such beams of light on a photographic recording medium.
