    • In the case where a wide-band color picture signal provided for a high-definition television broadcasting is sub-sampled for narrow-band transmission, in comparison with a stationary picture signal which is applied with sub-sampling according to a sampling pattern circulated at every two frames, the color picture signal in motional picture regions, which is conventionally applied with line-offset sub-sampling at every field, has a lowered resolution. To improve the resolution concerned, color difference signals in motional picture regions are applied with inter-field offset sub-sampling together with band-limitation for preventing aliasing distortion accompanied with subsampling and signal processing including interpolation for reproduction, which are effected in a form completed at every frame. As for motional picture regions having small motion, a luminance signal is applied also with similar sub-sampling and similar signal processing. As a result, the overall picture quality of the reproduced motional color picture is improve by signal processing thus adapted for color pictures in motional picture regions.

    • A multiplexer for compressing two television programs into the bandwidth normally required for a single television signal is disclosed wherein vertically adjacent lines in the odd and even field of each frame are summed and differenced in pairs having the same color subcarrier phase. "Line pair signals" respectively comprising the sum and difference of each line pair are then formed after the difference signal is time compressed without an overall increase in bandwdth. The line pair signals for each frame of one program are alternately transmitted with the line pair signals of a frame from the second program. The line pair signals of a video frame are fewer in number and longer in duration than NTSC field lines. Timing is such that one frame of both programs is transmitted during the time allotted to the transmission of one frame under the NTSC standard. The lines from odd fields of each program are reconstructed after transmission by adding the appropriate difference signals and sum signals. The lines from even fields are reconstructed by differencing the sum signals and the difference signals.

    • The invention relates to a method for the representation of video image sequences or scenes with a relative movement between a pick-up sensor and the viewed scene, such scenes being transmitted at reduced frame rate. By interpolation and/or extrapolation on the basis of two transmitted frames intermediate frames are generated on the receiving end of the transmission line and inserted into the transmitted frame sequence. The positions of image points (pels) which are identical in the two transmitted images are determined from the relationship of the pel positions for at least two identical pels on different vertical and horizontal coordinates in each of the two transmitted frames. Before reconstruction of the intermediate frames the mean brightness values for limited picture areas which represent the environment of at least one of the corresponding pels in two successive transmitted frames are determined. These brightness values are subtracted or divided and the brightness value in the extrapolation zone of the intermediate frames is corrected in accordance with the resulting differences or quotients.
