    • Skin categorizing apparatus comprises a conveyor on which skins are categorized by automatic area scanning and thickness measuring means generating data for transmission to a remote location for control and data processing equipment. Displays at the conveyor location are driven by the control equipment to show data first transmitted thereto. The area and thickness means is capable of dealing with a single skin or two sides of split skins simultaneously. Thus two sets of displays are shown one at each side of the conveyor. Data entry means serves for a skin quality input and data generation with an associated display. The control equipment includes a supervisor's display unit and two printers one for logging work progress and the other for printing out batch labels or advices when a batch is complete for a particular order.

    • In accordance with the present invention, methods and machinery are provided for automatically inspecting shaped, lined closures and rejecting those which fail to meet pre-established criteria for shape and seal. Specifically, shaped closures having concave interior portions and resilient sealing liners are supplied to an inspection station comprising one or more female inspection nests for receiving individual closures and one or more respective male inspection heads for insertion into the concave portions of respective closures. The inspection heads are provided with exterior shapes approximating the interiors of ideal closures so that penetration into the closure indicates the conformity of the closure to the ideal. Preferably, the inspection head is connected to a source of pressurized fluid for testing both the depth of penetration and the adequacy of the sealing ring. Closures capable of maintaining a seal at a predetermined level of pressure are automatically passed and closures failing to meet this test are automatically rejected. A preferred embodiment for accepting crown bottle caps from a plurality of lining machines is described in detail.

    • An electro-optical system for gauging the dimensions of a machined part by measuring coordinates of critical portions thereof to determine whether the part meets predetermined standards. The system includes a scanner having a sensitive face onto which is projected an image of the outline of the part being measured. Scan voltages for the scanner are developed by a scan generator to create a scan path which traverses those edges of the image of the part outline whose coordinates are to be determined, thereby causing the scanner to yield a video signal from which coordinate information can be derived. The relationship between the scan command and the coordinates of the image plane being scanned is known and controlled whereby the coordinates of any edge in the image plane can be determined simply by comparing the time of occurrence of that video edge and the command to the scanner. This coordinate information is then used to determined dimensions on the image plane. Each such dimension is then compared with a stored number representing the nominal value of the dimension being measured to produce an output signal indicating the disparity between the dimension measured and the nominal value thereof.

    • The statistical dispersion of a measured property of processed material is determined by finding the difference between two discimination levels at which respective predetermined fractions of measurement signals exceed the respective levels. A signal proportional to the dispersion is additively combined with a limit signal to produce a set-point signal used to control the set point of the process. The measurement signals are made independent of the speed of the process by integrating the detection signals over a plurality of uniformly distributed periods, with the duration of each such period directly proportional to speed and the number of such periods inversely proportional to speed.

    • Apparatus and method for determining a parameter which will effectively characterize the fluctuations of a dependent variable with respect to an independent variable, such as the height of a surface profile with respect to position along the surface. The apparatus includes means for detecting the variations of the independent variable such as a transducer for detecting the variations of the height of the surface profile along a line in the surface to obtain a signal representing the said variations, and means for differentiating the signal representing the said variations to provide a rate signal depending on the rate of change of the profile height, and means for combining the two signals, such as by integrating each and then dividing one by the other, to provide the said parameter which characterizes the fluctuations.
