    • A protective relay circuit includes a first a-c level detector or bi-polar threshold circuit to which a polarizing signal V.sub.POL is applied. An output is provided from the first a-c level detector only when the magnitude of V.sub.POL exceeds a predetermined value. Also included is a second a-c level detector or bi-polar threshold circuit to which an operating signal V.sub.OP is applied. An output is provided from the second a-c level detector only when the magnitude of V.sub.OP exceeds a predetermined value. The output of the first level detector is compared in a coincidence circuit with the output of the second level detector. The detection of coincidence for a predetermined time period, as measured by a characteristic timer, results in an output signal for use in controlling operation of a trip coil of a circuit breaker.

    • A fault current protection switch detects fault currents from conductors of a supply means to ground. The system uses at least one difference transformer connected to the conductors of the supply mains. An oscillation generator circuit is connected to the difference transformer through feedback windings. The oscillation generator circuit checks the magnetization of a core of the difference transformer, and, in the event of a change in the transforming properties of the core due to "mis" magnetization caused by a fault current, the oscillation generator circuit triggers a control and switching member connected in the supply mains to disconnect the same.

    • Separate current transformers sense the individual currents flowing in each conductor of a distribution circuit. A full wave rectifying network includes a plurality of parallel pairs of like poled, series diodes connected between a pair of buses. One corresponding side of each transformer secondary is connected to the junction between a different diode pair. A series circuit consisting of an additional pair of like poled diodes and a burden resistor is also connected between the buses. The corresponding other sides of the transformer secondaries are connected in common to the junction between the additional diode pair. A voltage is developed across the burden resistor only upon the existence of an imbalance in the currents flowing in the distribution circuit.

    • The protective relay circuits herein provide a combined distance and overcurrent type of function. The protective relay circuit includes an a-c level detector or bi-polar threshold circuit to which the quantity I (Z.sub.R - Z.sub.F) is applied. The quantity I is the current in the line, Z.sub.R is a replica or reference impedance corresponding to the lines being protected and Z.sub.F is the line impedance to the fault from the relay measuring point. IZ.sub.F is equal to V, the voltage input to the relay. An output is provided from the a-c level detector only when the quantity I (Z.sub.R - Z.sub.F) exceeds a predetermined value. The output of the level detector is compared in a coincidence circuit, or AND gate, with a polarizing signal. The detection of coincidence for a selectable predetermined time period, as measured by a characteristic timer, results in an output signal for use in controlling operation of the trip coil of the circuit breaker. The protective relay circuit may be used on series-capacitor compensated lines as well as on uncompensated lines. When the protective relay circuit is used on a compensated line, the a-c threshold level of the level detector is set to be a function of the breakdown voltage of the spark gap protecting the series compensating capacitor.

    • An out-of-step relay for an alternating potential electric power transmission line is disclosed wherein the decision to trip is determined by the rate of change of the phase relationship of the voltages at the remote and local ends of the transmission line as well as by the magnitude of the phase difference of the remote and local voltages. More particularly, there is described a pair of AND networks which provide two timing signals proportional to the phase difference of the voltages and a pair of timing devices; one of said devices timing the difference in the time of the two timing signals to establish the rate of change of the phase relationship and the other of said devices timing the sum of the two timing signals to establish a signal which is representative of the magnitude of the phase relationship.
