    • A method and system for controlling a plurality of process control variables for processing discrete products is described. The method comprising: utilizing process models relating a plurality of product quality parameters to the plurality of process control variables; measuring the plurality of product quality parameters on a first plurality of products; exercising statistical quality control tests on the plurality of product quality parameters of the first plurality of products; continuing processing if statistical quality control tests are successful; otherwise measuring the plurality of product quality parameters on a second plurality of products; tuning the process models to create tuned process models using the plurality of product quality parameters from the second plurality of products, wherein the tuning estimates a changed state of the processing; estimating new values for the plurality of process control variables from the tuned models; processing a third plurality of products at the new values of the plurality of process control variables; measuring the plurality of product quality parameters on the third plurality of products; repeating the tuning of the process models and the estimating new values for the plurality of process control variables if the quality control parameters from the third plurality of products are not acceptable; otherwise continuing processing products with the new values of the plurality of process control variables if the quality control parameters from the third plurality of products are acceptable.

    • A programmable controller is disclosed for the purpose of controlling devices such as machine tools and other machinery, and which is often mated with a host computer numerical controller. The programmable controller is configured such that certain user-designated "fast-scan" outputs can operate at much higher speeds than non-designated "normal" outputs, thereby greatly increasing the response time and efficiency of the operations that are controlled by those fast-scan outputs. The programmable controller uses a processor which scans through its user-definable program (including the value of all system inputs and outputs) before it attempts to change the value of any of its outputs. The physical input/output (I/O) interfaces are located on I/O racks, each of which also includes an intelligent bus adaptor. The intelligent bus adaptor includes its own processor which periodically communicates with the processor in the programmable controller. The intelligent bus adaptor's processor controls the fast-scan outputs located on that particular I/O rack within very short time intervals, and allows for a response time that is an order of magnitude faster than the response time of normal outputs of the programmable controller.

That is, a response waveform of the controlled variable at the time when the disturbance is added to the controlled object is set to f (t), a response waveform of the feedback signal in an opened loop state, such that feedback of said controlled variable is turned off, is set to p (t), a relative degree of the disturbance is set to "d", and a relative degree of the controlled object is set to "g". At the time in which the disturbance is added to the controlled object, each differential value of the response waveform f (t) up to at least a degree (2g+d-2) is equal to each differential value corresponding to the response waveform p (t), and at finite time, each differential value of the response waveform f (t) up to at least a degree (2g+d-2) becomes zero and after the finite time, the differential values relative to all degrees become zero.
