    • A high-voltage circuit breaker having a fixed contact and a movable contact also has a piston/cylinder system for generating a quenching gas flow to extinguish an arc during a switching action. The piston of the piston/cylinder system is connected to the movable contact. For the purpose of increasing the pressure in the quenching gas flow and for extending the blowing process, an auxiliary piston is provided on the opposite side of the fixed cylinder wall as the main piston. The auxiliary piston is driven in conjunction with the movable contact and the main piston of the piston/cylinder system in such a manner that it is moved in the first half of the circuit-breaking movement in opposition to the direction of movement of the main piston, and in the second half of the circuit-breaking movement in synchronism with the piston of the piston/cylinder system, into a circuit breaking position. In the first half of the movement the space between the auxiliary piston and the fixed cylinder wall is compressed so that the gas located therein is pushed into the space between the cylinder and the main piston of the piston/cylinder system.

    • An electric switch includes two quenching nozzles which are arranged opposite each other at the distance of the switching gap; a contact tube; a guide tube and a longitudinally movable switching tube for bridging the switching gap which is coupled, together with a movable pressure piston of a pressure piston/pressure cylinder arrangement provided for generating a quenching medium flow acting on the arc, to a common drive. In order to improve such a switch still further with respect to the quenching medium flow, the pressure piston is connected rigidly to the switching tube and is arranged in a stationary pressure cylinder which is connected in the region of its end surrounding the contact tube via passage openings in the contact tube to the interior of the latter. The pressure piston is connected rigidly to a suction piston in a suction cylinder which is connected in the region of its end facing the pressure cylinder, via holes in the guide tube, to the interior thereof.

    • A gas-insulated circuit breaker is described which includes a Y-shaped, hollow grounded metal base member formed from a support section and two angularly-extending legs. A hollow insulating casing is secured to each base member leg. A stationary and a movable contact, separable from each other to establish an arc therebetween, are disposed in one of the casings, with an insulating gas disposed within both the base member and the insulating casings. A mechanism is used for directing a blast of insulating gas into the arc established between the separating contact, and includes a piston fixedly disposed in the one casing and a puffer cylinder secured to the movable contact and movable over the piston to compress the gas therebetween. An operating mechanism is associated with the base member support section for moving the movable contact, and a drive rod insulatably connects the movable contact and the operating mechanism. The operating mechanism thus moves the movable contact through the insulating drive rod.

    • A high voltage power switch for alternating current has a stationary, hollow contact, an axially displaceable contact, a nozzle through which compressed gas is directed into an expansion chamber, and a cylindrical coil. The coil is connected at one of its ends with a first part of the hollow contact, and at its other end with a second part of the stationary contact. In a switch of this type, the disconnect capacity is improved by an increased exchange of gas between the arc and the surrounding compressed gas, while the dimensions of the coil connected with the hollow contact and the magnitude of the flow of compressed gas are relatively small. These features are obtained by configuring the first part of the stationary contact as a nozzle, and providing a compression device, actuated by the contacts, to produce a flow of compressed gas of a magnitude so that the arc is commutated from the first part to the second part of the contact within a period of time that is short compared with the duration of the half-wave of the current, prior to the time the current changes polarity.

    • In the cut-on position of the protective switch a movable contact element engages with a stationary contact element and at the same time is exposed to the action of a force displacing such movable contact element into a cut-off position. The movable contact element is arrestable in the cut-on position by means of a locking device which can be activated by an excess current. In order to reduce the number of movable parts to a minimum as well as to avoid parts which generate heat due to appreciable thermal losses, such locking device is provided with a substantially U-shaped locking element formed of a soft magnetic material. This locking element surrounds the movable contact element with play or clearance and is displaceably mounted transversely with respect to the flow of current in such movable contact element. At least one free leg end of the locking element is provided with a stop which in the cut-on position cooperates with a stop nose which is movable together with the movable contact element. The protective switch is suitable for installation in medium voltage and high-voltage switching installations.

    • An electric gas blast circuit breaker is disclosed which has two stationary contact pieces. A switching unit is movable between closed and open positions for electrically bridging the contact pieces in the closed position and for electrically disconnecting the contact pieces in the open position whereby an arc develops when the switching unit is moved to the open position. A gas blast device blasts a stream of gas through the arc when the switching unit is moved to the open position. The switching unit includes a supporting body and a slide-contact ring made of an arc-resistant material. The ring slideably contacts one of the contact pieces in the closed position and is mounted on the supporting body so as to be electrically insulated therefrom. A plurality of elongated contact elements are disposed in the supporting body for electrically connecting the contact pieces when the switching unit is in the closed position. There is provided an electrical connection between at least one of the contact elements and the slide-contact ring when the switching unit is in the closed position and also when it moves into the open position and continuously in all operating positions thereof.

    • A gas-blast switch containing both a stationary and a movable contact element. At one of these contact elements there is arranged a blast nozzle whose inlet chamber or compartment is connected with the outlet of a pump chamber containing an extinguishing gas and which can be placed under pressure during the cutoff stroke. To prevent escape of the extinguishing gas heated by the arc at the region of the blast nozzle, and thus, placed under pressure, and therefore, to also reduce the mechanical and thermal loading of the blast nozzle, the valve arrangement comprises a switching valve which, in the rest position, connects at least part of the inlet chamber of the blast nozzle with the space or chamber surrounding such blast nozzle and upon response of such switching valve disconnects the aforesaid part of the inlet chamber from the space surrounding the inlet chamber of the blast nozzle.
