    • This invention pertains to electrochemical cells, and specifically to an inner seal member in an electrochemcical cell. The inner seal member is positioned against, and in intimate contact with that portion of the separator which extends above the cathode mix, or a retaining washer on the cathode mix, and is also in intimate contact with the cathode mix or the retaining washer. The seal member is preferably emplaced as a fluid material and is preferably distributed by centrifugal force, by rotating the cell as the sealant material is dispensed into the cell. The inner seal member is effective to retard loss of battery performance over an extended period of storage time, both at room temperature and at elevated temperature. The seal member is a composition of hydrocarbons or fatty acid ester oils having the capacity to remain in full surface-to-surface contact, as it cools, with the surfaces upon which it is placed warm or hot, in the cell.

    • An electrochemical battery having an alkaline electrolyte and a gelled negative electrode containing zinc powder free from mercury, cadmium, and lead, and 1 ppm to 1000 ppm of at least one organic stabilizer compound selected from polyfluorine compounds of the ethoxyl fluoroalcohol type and compounds of the alcoyl sulfide and polyethoxyl alcohol type, the electrode being provided with a negative current collector immersed in the gell and connected to the negative terminal, wherein the current collector comprises a bundle of conducting fibers which are fixed together at their ends closest to the negative terminal, the fibers having a diameter lying in the range 0.05 mm to 1 mm, and being constituted, at least superficially, by a metal selected from: indium; gallium; cadmium; and pure zinc.

    • In a galvanic primary cell, the anode mixture of a zinc-alkaline electrolyte gel is displaced by the introduction of a hollow body into the concentrically arranged anode space so that the zinc powder is fixed in a layer oriented toward the cathode of the cell, ensuring proper discharge, and so that the aqueous portion of the anode mixture can escape inside the displacement body through narrow openings in the body's wall. By attaching the displacement body to the negative electrode conductor, the current drainage can be improved by making at least part of the displacement body of a metallically conducting material.
