    • A solid state electronic power switch selectively controls power delivered to a load such as a fan. A momentary contact control switch is provided which is connected to a switching logic circuit whose output state changes when the control switch is activated. A plurality of power control circuits are connected in parallel with one another and in series with a load across a power source. Each of the power control circuits includes either an SCR or a triac element. A turn-on control circuit is provided connected to the SCR or triac for initial turn-on only when a voltage across the element is small compared to a peak-to-peak voltage across it prior to application of gate voltage. With the system of the invention, the load such as a fan can be operated at various discrete power levels without the associated mechanical and electrical noise problems of previous systems.

    • An electronic switching system for inductive loads in A.C. circuits, comprising a triac switch in series with an inductive load such as transformer or motor, etc. across an A.C. voltage. The control voltage for the triac switch is provided by a smaller, lower power triac driver, which has a light emitting diode controlled by an optically isolated transistor. The optically isolated transistor is provided with electrical pulses each a half cycle of voltage by means of a zero crossing detector. Since it is impossible to know precisely what the power factor of the load is, the triggering of the triac driver is provided at zero voltage on both the upward and downward crossing. These pulses, amplified by the transistor, control the triac driver. The load current will lag the voltage by some angle, dependent on the power factor, and the current will stop at its zero point. The triac driver has its control voltage at the zero of voltage and, therefore, has a control ready to ignite the triac as soon as the current in the reverse direction passes to zero.

    • A switching arrangement including a current switch for providing a low impedance electrical path therethrough in response to the application of triggering signals thereto, and for providing a high impedance electrical path in the absence of the triggering signals, is connected in an electrical path between a load and an AC voltage source. A control circuit is provided for applying triggering signals to the current switch when enabling power is applied thereto. A normally open switch provides enabling power derived from the AC voltage source to the control circuit when the normally open switch is closed. A normally closed switch provides enabling power derived from current which flows through the current switch to the control circuit when the normally closed switch is closed. Upon momentary closure of the normally open switch, the switching arrangement is turned on. Upon momentary opening of the normally closed switch, or upon the momentary interruption of the AC voltage supplied to the switching arrangement, the switching arrangement is turned off.

    • A controllable rectifier circuit which may be used in a power supply selectively produces a half-wave or a full-wave rectified signal. The rectifier circuit includes a pair of input terminals for receiving an AC signal and a bridge rectifier coupled to the input terminals and including a pair of output terminals across which a rectified AC signal is produced. The bridge rectifier comprises a first current path including a switchable rectifier for conducting positive half cycles of the AC signal and a second current path including a switchable rectifier for conducting negative half cycles of the AC signal. A pulse generator is supplied with reduced amplitude versions of the positive and negative half cycles of the AC signal, in sequence, to produce an output pulse when the reduced amplitude of the half cycle supplied thereto is less than a predetermined level. A non-reduced half cycle of the AC signal is selectively supplied to the pulse generator to prevent the pulse generator from generating an output pulse during that half cycle so that an output pulse is generated only during the beginning and ending portions of the other half cycle. The generated output pulses are supplied to each of the switchable rectifiers, whereby the bridge rectifier rectifies both half cycles of the AC signal when the non-reduced half cycle is not supplied to the pulse generator, and the bridge rectifier rectifies only the other half cycle of the AC signal when the non-reduced half cycle is supplied to the pulse generator.
