    • A method for disconnecting character strings from compressed image data comprising the steps of: scanning data blocks representative of the photographic/graphic data portion to detect the initial and last y-coordinates of the continuous text data portion, accumulating the number of pixel lines representative of the text data portion, and calculating the character string width upon detecting a profile line. Based on the accumulated number of pixel lines representative of the text data portion, a discrimination is made as to whether a character string is connected to the scanned block. When a character string is connected only to one of left and right sides of the data block, the connected character string is disconnected forcedly by creating a new block corresponding to the character string, based on the position information of each text data portion. In accordance with the present invention, it is possible to improve the accuracy in extracting each data portion and thus the reliability in the acknowledgement of the document.

    • A run length encoder for converting bi-level video image data made up of white and black representative pixel values to a run length code to be used by a vector processor including a transition detector for detecting the transition of inputted image data values from either white to black or black to white. The inputted image data are addressed along each scanned line. At every white to black transition, the pixel address is stored in memory. The number of continuous black pixels following this first transition is counted until a black to white transition is detected. The resulting count value corresponding to each stored address value for each black "run" is also stored in memory, wherein these stored values represent the run length code of the video image data for use with the vector processor.

    • One-dimensional compression is effected by addressing a first ROM (62) with information in respect of the length and the type of run. One-dimensional decompression is effected by addressing with the compressed code, a second ROM, bearing the information in respect of the runs and the length of the code. That is provided by a shift register controlled by a logic unit capable of recognising a group of least significant bits, to permit additional shifting of the register, and addressing of the second ROM with a bit number less than the maximum length of the codes. For two-dimensional compression or decompression, there is provided a pair of RAMs for temporarily storing a reference line which, together with the current line, actuates a logic means (38), for controlling coding and decoding of the latter. For compression of the medium tones, besides the runs of the two colors, coding is effect in respect of the runs of the alternations of the two colors defined on the basis of the color of the initial pixel, and the type of the successive run is defined. Besides the coding and decoding for two-color images, the two ROMs also carry the coding and decoding for images with the half tone. Finally, the apparatus comprises an archive memory which can be connected to the compression module for archival storage of the images with the maximum degree of compression. By instead connecting the decompression module between the archive memory and the compression module, the image can be transmitted with a type of compression compatible with the receiving station.

    • The present invention is featured, in the transmission of pixel (picture element) signals grouped into blocks defined in a series of pixel signals, by sending a control signal instead of said pixel signals when the pixel signals contained in a block are all white signals or sending pixel signals after modulation when black signals are present in said block thereby compressing the time required for transmission, also by selecting the maximum amplitude of said control signal larger than the maximum amplitude of said modulated pixel signals thereby enabling identification of said control signals from said pixel signals, and by sending, when the final black pixel signal in a black signal containing block is followed by consecutive white pixel signals, a control signal instead of such white pixel signals thereby achieving further compression of the transmission time.
