    • In a method of image compression in which vertical and horizontal white skipping are performed, data compression is performed in the regions containing black pixels other than the skipped regions. While vertical and horizontal white skipping being performed, in the other regions, regions are detected in which pixel values change in smooth fashion, such as the outlines of letters and encoding is performed using the pixel value of the leading column of the region, number of columns and amount of change of the pixel values. As a result, the compression factor of the image can be increased and a considerable contribution made to reduce the storage capacity for storage of data and reduce the time required for data transmission.

    • In a coding apparatus, a first detecting device serves to detect a variation between conditions of pixels in a currently-coded line. A second detecting device serves to detect a variation between conditions of pixels in a reference line which immediately precedes the currently-coded line.     • A page of MMR coded picture data may be transmitted with MMR coded journal data added to the page at the time of transmission. The first line of journal data may be transmitted after it is MMR coded using a total white line as a virtual line. Thereafter, the data of all lines of journal data may MR coded using a preceding line as a reference line and transmitted. A line which may be the same as the virtual line may then be MR coded and transmitted. The MMR coded picture data may then be transmitted line by line directly from a memory. Accordingly, all of the data may be decoded as MR code at the receiving side.

    • In an MR code expanding apparatus, a reference line processing circuit shifts reference line data bit-serially and at the same time, searches for a color changing point of the reference line data at seven successive picture element positions in parallel. An output data producing circuit produces, bit-serially and in synchronism with the shifting of the reference line data, expanded line data of each picture element corresponding to each reference line picture element arriving at the center of these seven picture element positions. A code analyzing circuit supplies the reference line processing circuit with a signal which designates one of these seven picture element positions at which the color changing point is to be detected. A signal which represents detection of the color changing point at the designated picture element position is used for controlling the state transition of the expanding operation.

    • An apparatus for selecting a reference line for image data compression including a plurality of mutually connected reference selector chips for selecting a reference scan line from vertical mode coding of image data. The reference selector chips select a reference scan line from a plurality of preceding scan lines in exclusive or combination of the image data of each candidate reference scan line with the image data from the input scan line. The candidate reference scan line that has the lowest number of dissimilar bits is selected as the reference scan line. Each candidate reference scan line has associated therewith a register having bit positions arranged from the highest order bit position to a lowest order bit position for storing a binary sum of the number of dissimilar bits. When the sums are compared, the binary value and successive bit positions are compared from the highest order bit position to the lowest order bit position. When the binary value for a compared bit position of a register is greater than the binary value in the corresponding bit position of another register, each reference selector chip generates a losing signal for indicating that the register lost the arbitration. When the lowest order bit position of a register is not greater than the lowest order bit position of any other register and no losing signal was generated for the register, the associated chip generates a winning signal for indicating which candidate reference scan line had the least number of bits dissimilar to the corresponding bits in the input scan line. Each chip further includes a circuit for establishing a priority among the candidate reference scan lines so that two registers both having the smallest binary sum will not create a deadlock.

    • An image signal coding apparatus includes reference and coding line change point detection circuits, reference line shift registers, a coding line shift register, a symbol detection circuit, coding and reference line ROM tables, and a code determination circuit. The coding line change point detection circuit receives a serial reference line image signal in synchronism with a serial coding line image signal. The reference line shift registers receive serial change point data in the reference line image signal and output parallel reference line change point data. The coding line shift register receives serial change point data in the coding line image signal and outputs parallel coding line change point data. The symbol detection circuit monitors output states of the reference and coding line shift registers. A run length counter counts the number of pixels between the change points in the coding line image signal. The ROM tables cooperate with the code determination circuit to code the coding line image signal in response to outputs from the symbol detection circuit and the run length counter.
