    • An earth boring bit having a body and a cantilevered bearing shaft extending inwardly and downwardly from the body. A rotatable cutter with an open end is assembled over the shaft, which has a journal surface formed around a longitudinal axis. The cutter has a bearing surface sized to permit assembly over the journal surface of the shaft. At the open end of the cutter bearing surface is a seal recess which includes an intersecting wall that defines an annular, generally curved corner to oppose the journal surface of the shaft. The cutter bearing surface has a curved outer region that converges from the annular corner of the seal recess into an inner region to reduce the stress the corner induces upon the journal bearing surface of the shaft, including the stress induced by cutter cocking during drilling.

    • A method for manufacturing an earth boring drill bit and bit produced thereby are shown. The bit has rotatable cutters with a plurality of milled teeth, each of the teeth having opposing flanks. A first tube hardfacing is applied to a selected one of the opposing flanks, the hardfacing comprising a metallic binder with wear-resistant particles dispersed throughout the binder. The other of the opposing flanks has a second tube hardfacing applied thereto. The particle size of the wear-resistant particles differs between the first and second tube hardfacings so that the resulting difference in abrasion resistance of the tooth flanks produces a self-sharpening effect as the tooth wears.

    • A welding torch is shown with a dual shield gas flow for preventing flux buildup on the weld area for welds in confined spaces. The torch has a wire conduit for receiving an advancing supply of welding wire. The wire conduit has a curved end portion for guiding the welding wire toward the weld area and has an opening through which the welding wire extends for welding. A primary gas conduit directs the flow of primary shield gas and has an open, gas dispensing end adjacent the wire conduit opening. A secondary shield gas source located rearward of the gas dispensing end directs the flow of secondary shield gas in the direction of the weld area. The secondary shield gas flow is arranged to surround the primary gas flow in the direction of the weld. The orientation of the primary gas exiting the primary gas conduit induces the flow of secondary gas to change direction to provide additional gas shielding for the weld area.

    • An improved method for hardfacing tool joints for earth boring drill pipe. Annular bands of hardfacing are applied by an apparatus that creates an arc between a consumable steel wire and the tool joint. The steel wire is reciprocated across the width of the band as the tool joint is rotated. Granules of tungsten carbide flow by gravity from a hopper into the weld puddle. The flow of granules into the puddle is stopped just prior to reaching the tie-in point. The arc continues a short distance, creating an overlapping protuberance at the tie-in that is free of granules at the surface. This protuberance can be easily ground smooth with the remainder of the hardfacing.
