    • An infrared ray generator includes a housing of heat resisting refractory material, the housing forming a first opening facing in a desired heating direction. A number of heat resistant fiber mesh screens cover the first opening and, together with the housing, form a combustion chamber. A burner extends through a second opening in the housing to direct a combustion flame into the combustion chamber so that the mesh screens are brought to red heat. Gaseous substances, which originate from the burner combustion flame, are then burned upon contacting the mesh screens, so that these substances do not pass to the outside air. The mesh screens also serve to suppress noise developed within the combustion chamber.

    • Space heaters employing an omnidirectional infrared radiant burner are disclosed. Cylindrical in shape, the radiant burner includes an inner cylindrical mantle comprised of three concentric fine-mesh grids which are formed from flat mesh stock. The outer of the mantle grids has a seam which is bonded to form a continuous cylinder, while the inner grids each have the shape of a split O with an open break line therein. The inner two concentric mantle grids are inserted inside the outer bonded grid, which retains them against their tendency to spring outwardly. Concentrically outward from the mantle is a larger mesh outer grid defining a radiant element, both the mantle and outer grid being retained by a pair of end caps having inner and outer annular flanges. In the lower end cap is an inlet opening for air and fuel and across the opening is a very fine mesh grid which causes turbulence and insures proper mixing of the air and fuel. The two opposed end caps are retained together by axially extending pins.

    • Disclosed in one embodiment is a domestic cooking unit which includes a drip pan, a planar countertop containing at least one opening, and a heating plate located in the opening and to be heated by a gas burner positioned below the heating plate. The drip pan, countertop, and heating plate are advantageously formed from an infrared transmitting, heat-resistant, nonporous, glassceramic material having a low thermal expansion coefficient and a low thermal conductivity. The periphery of the heating plate is spaced inwardly from the periphery of the opening to permit flow of combustion products from the gas burner out from the drip pan and to prevent heat conduction between the heating plate and the countertop. A plurality of spaced support means extend between the drip pan and the heating plate for supporting and positioning the heating plate. The drip pan and the countertop can be formed as an integral unit. The cooking surface of the heating plate is flat and preferably disposed in the same plane as the surface of the countertop thereby presenging a flat area for general use when the unit is not being used for cooking.

    • A patio gas fired heater includes a burner element for supporting a gas flame and a manual igniter device for igniting the gas. A monitoring thermocouple element controls a valve so that the gas flow will be interrupted when the flame is extinguished. A manual override device on the valve is provided for superceding the monitoring device. A cam member controls both the manual override device and the igniter device to permit the cam member to activate both the igniter device and the manual override device while insuring the flow of gas to the burner element.

    • A fuel fired space heater directing infrared in a downward direction from a radiant confined within a combustion chamber at the lower end of an elongate inclined housing, an enlarged combustion gases discharging chamber above said combustion chamber and delivering the combustion gases to an outlet, the housing having a radiant heat discharging port beneath said combustion chamber, and a flexible panel of a material highly transmissive of infrared and also being inclined with the lower edge of the inclined panel secured to the housing adjacent the radiant heat discharging port and the upper side portion of the panel being spaced from the housing or supplied by an air intake passageway, but confronting the entire port to enclose the port and deliver combustion air downwardly along the inner face of the panel for preventing deposit of dust and delivering cool combustion air for cooling the panel and supplying air to the fuel fired radiant. Space heaters for extremely dusty spaces such as turkey houses where a substantial amount of litter is on the floor usually require an extreme amount of maintenance so as to remain functional, primarily because of the dust that must be contended with in such installations. In turkey brooders, a substantial amount of the dust is airborne of which 20 percent by weight is in continuous suspension and 80 percent is sedimentary so as to settle on everything that has a somewhat horizontal surface. Insurance and other applicable codes vary from place to place and the nature of the fuel fired heating installation will be controlled accordingly. It has been a problem to accommodate the installation codes of heaters as well as to accommodate the dust problem which is always present and which is of primary importance in the design or selection of a heater for a particular installation.

    • A catalytic heater having a catalytic bed connected to a frame, incorporates an improved ignition and fuel shutoff system. A needle valve controlling the discharge of fuel onto the catalytic bed for oxidation includes a thermosensitive needle which is preheated by a pilot light. Upon reaching a predetermined temperature, the thermosensitive needle disengages its valve seat to allow fuel from the fuel supply to discharge onto the catalytic bed where oxidation thereof occurs. Upon cooling of the catalytic bed the thermosensitive needle resets to abrogate the discharge of fuel onto the catalytic bed and thereby prevent leakage of fuel.
