    • A positioning system is provided in which command and feedback signals are processed to develop an analog error signal for application to a servo drive to position a controlled element. The command signals are in the form of pulses each of which corresponds to a certain incremental distance of movement. The feedback signals are developed from phase shifts of a low frequency resolver signal, such phase shifts being proportional to movement of the element. Such feedback signals are applied to a resolver digitizer circuit which develops a train of resolver pulses in response to the phase shift represented by each feedback signal. Each such resolver pulse corresponds to the same incremental distance of movement as a command pulse and both the resolver pulses and the command pulses are applied to a comparator and error signal circuit in which any cumulative error in either direction is stored as a digital number and is converted to an analog error signal of the proper polarity. The system effects accurate positioning of an element while accommodating a large temporary following error and thereby allowing movement at high speeds in response to high command pulse frequencies.

    • An optical micrometer scans an article passing through its zone of measurement to provide a series of pulses representing the dimension of an article. Each new measurement is compared against a previous measurement, or an average of a predetermined number of previous measurements, and the difference is then compared to a previously established deviation limit. If this difference does not exceed the deviation limit, then the new measurement is transferred to the output of the circuit for utilization by the system, but if this difference exceeds the deviation limit, then the previous measurement signal will be transferred to the output. An alarm is provided whenever a predetermined number of new measurement signals outside the deviation limit occur within a certain number of measurement intervals.

The apparatus further comprises means coupled to the winding of the second relatively movable member for squaring the output signal, means coupled to the means for squaring for demodulating the squared output signal to derive a pulse signal of constant peak amplitude and variable pulse width as the first and second relatively movable members are moved relative to one another, means coupled to the means for demodulating for integrating the phase signal to derive a position signal indicative of the relative movement of the first and second relatively rotatable members, the position signal alternating during such relative movement substantially between a supply voltage and a reference voltage, and means coupled to the means for integrating for offsetting the position signal so that it is substantially balanced about the reference voltage.

    • A set point adjust mechanism is disclosed for use with process controllers to manually adjust the set point value and simultaneously change the set point value indicated. The set point adjust mechanism includes a manually actuable thumbwheel and an idler wheel mounted in contact with each other on a slider. Thumb pressure on the thumbwheel causes the slider to move so that the idler wheel contacts an indicator drive wheel. The set point value source, usually a potentiometer, is connected to the indicator drive wheel which also drives a belt that positions a pointer with respect to a scale. The pointer and scale provide the set point indication. When the pointer hits a pointer stop, or for any other reason resists motion, further rotation of the thumbwheel causes the idler wheel to move to engage a mechanical stop to prevent further thumb pressure from causing dislocation between the indicated set point value and the set point value source.

In another embodiment, signals representing desired displacement along the single axis or the pair of coordinate axes are combined with signals representing actual displacement of the head relative to the platen along these axes to produce error signals for use in a closed loop servo to drive the head to the desired displacements. Servo means are also provided for preventing rotation of the head about the coordinate axes.
