    • An electrical signal recording and playback system is described in which an analog input signal is converted to a digital signal that pulses a light source to form a single, series-recorded track of binary coded digital information including information spots arranged in groups separated by synchronizing spots recorded on a photographic film which is played back in a similar manner. The photographic film is a compact, permanent record of long, useful lifetime which may be photographically copied to provide a plurality of inexpensive copies. A spiral track photographic record is used in one embodiment which can be employed to provide a music system of high quality. In one embodiment, a photographic record having bits arranged in lines or columns is held in a fixed position and a fan-shaped laser beam is moved horizontally over the record in a primary scan, and a row of microlenses focus line segments of the columns in seriatim on a row of photocells, the microlenses being stepped vertically from line to line in a vertical secondary scanning. In another embodiment, a laser beam is scanned horizontally and vertically to illuminate pages of information on a photographic element one after another, and, during the illumination of the pages, a matrix of lenslets, each covering one page, is scanned vertically over the height of a page, to transmit the lines of the illuminated pages seriatim to a row of photocells.

    • A flying spot scanning system is provided by utilizing reflected light from a multifaceted rotating polygon which is then directed to the scanned medium. A light source illuminates at least one of the facets of the polygon during each scanning cycle to provide the spot scan. In each scanning cycle, information is transmitted to scanned medium by modulating the light from the light source in accordance with a video signal. To assure a uniform spot size at the scanned medium, an optical convolution of elements is selected in combination with the light source such that an adequate depth of focus at the medium is assured. An imaging lens is provided in series with a lens, which expands an original light beam, to converge the expanded beam to illuminate the selected facet or contiguous facets that are to control the movement of a spot throughout a scan angle. In the preferred embodiment, the rotation of the polygon is synchronized in phased relation to the scan rate used to obtain the video signal.

    • The illustrated scanning device includes a rotatable wheel having six scanning mirrors mounted thereon disposed between a spherical primary mirror and the image provided by the primary mirror. The portion of the wheel nearest the image approximates a hyperbola having a front focal point offset from the center of the wheel. As the wheel rotates and sequentially moves the scanning mirrors along the hyperbola, each mirror reflects image information along a line across the image to the front focal point of the hyperbola. A small mirror is disposed at the focal point to reflect light toward a remote detector.

    • A large screen television receiver using a laser beam to excite discrete elements of rare earth oxides to incandescence. The discrete elements are focused onto a viewing screen which may be viewed by a large audience. A laser beam is split into three parts to show a three color image. Laser beam modulators, of any known type, are used to vary the beam intensity in accordance with the receiver signals. Synchronous moving mirrors are employed to scan the array of elements and a projector system is employed to project the received pattern onto a large screen.

    • A laser page scanner is disclosed in which the information bearing sheet to be scanned is disposed in a cylinder which translates axially past an opto-mechanical scanning apparatus fixed coaxially within the cylinder. A laser beam is directed from outside the cylinder along a path parallel to the cylinder axis into the interior of the cylinder where it is redirected by relay mirrors to the cylinder axis and to a rotating mirror which reflects the beam radially outwardly whereby the beam scans the cylinder in a continuous circle. As a result of the longitudinal translation of the cylinder, the document is, in effect, line scanned. The light reflected back to the rotating mirror at a given instant is an analog of information which is present at the scanned spot. The reflected light is redirected by the rotating mirror back along the axis of the cylinder through a pair of spot forming lenses to a first photo-diode which is utilized as the input sensor to suitable electronics for storing or reproducing the scanned information. A second photo-diode is fixed radially outwardly from the rotating mirror in order to intercept the laser beam once each revolution of the rotating mirror to provide a synch signal. A circular mask is disposed between the first photo-diode and the nearest spot forming lens to prevent a selected core portion of the beam from reaching the photo-diode to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. In order to simplify the optical system, one of the relay mirrors is cemented to the center of the spot forming lens nearest the first photo-diode to redirect the laser beam through the other spot forming lens before it impinges on the rotating mirror.
