摘要： A system and method for information retrieval comprises a computing device with a client and a progressive feature server coupled by a network. The client includes a feature extraction module, a progressive sending module, a sampling module and a feedback receiver. The progressive sending module divides the features into groups and sends them to the server. The progressive sending module is also responsive to commands from the feedback receiver to terminate the transmission of additional features if a match is found. The progressive feature server is coupled for communication with the client and includes a progressive receiving module, a feedback generator, an image recognizer and a result delivery module. The image recognizer progressively processes the groups of extracted features received from the client and provides results and hints for improved recognition. The present invention also includes methods for processing captured information progressively, sending extracted features in groups, and progressively performing image recognition for improved recognition speed.

The transmission of data representing the event information is handled in at least two levels of software classes, with at least one abstract software class having a declared virtual function and two or more software classes derived from the at least one abstract class and having definitions of the function for communicating the event information through specified communication protocols. The formatted data is transmitted through, e.g., e-mail or FTP to a predetermined destination or may be saved to local storage, e.g., a local disk. By sharing resources, code duplication is reduced or eliminated.

The inter-modality resolution modification module modifies a resolution of at least one of the media streams based on the channel limitation and content of the media streams. In another embodiment, the system includes a region of interest identification (ROI) module and an intra-modality resolution modification module instead of, or in addition to, the MOI identification module and inter-modality resolution modification module. The ROI identification module receives a media stream and identifies at least one ROI within the media stream.

The need for good compression is important for storage and transmission. Due to the large size, even compressed, it is often difficult to access document images quickly and efficiently for display on monitors. The nascent JPM file format enables the best compound document image compression in terms of rate-distortion. However, the access into a JPM file is limited by the access features of the coders used. JPEG 2000 is an image coding system that allows access to lower resolutions, progressive bit-rates, and regions of interest.
