    • A separation circuit, method of determining a residual level of an echo, and an echo canceling system, bit pump and transceiver employing the circuit and method. The echo canceling system employing the separation circuit is couplable between a transmit and receive path of the bit pump and generates an echo canceling signal. In one embodiment, the separation circuit includes a symbol determination circuit that accepts a receive signal, propagating along the receive path, substantially free of an echo and determines a symbol associated with the receive signal. The separation circuit also includes an estimator stage, coupled to the symbol determination circuit, that receives the symbol and provides an estimated receive signal. The separation circuit generates data representing a residual level of the echo as a function of the estimated receive signal and the echo canceling signal.

    • Crosstalk between subscriber loops used to transmit different broadband services through the same bundled telephone cable is a significant limitation to providing digital subscriber line services. A method for estimating the crosstalk, identifying the sources of the crosstalk and predicting additional sources of crosstalk are disclosed. The crosstalk sources are identified in the frequency domain by maximizing the correlation with a “basis set” of received crosstalk PSDs which consist of the cascade of a finite set of known transmit PSDs types times a representative set of crosstalk couplings. Multiple crosstalk types are identified with a technique of successive spectral subtraction. Once a type is identified the crosstalk disturber is compared against all other members of the complete set for that type. Additionally, Mutliple Regression (MR) techniques and a Matching Pursuit (MP) algorithm are used to increase the ability of the system and method to identify various crosstalk disturbers. The identification of the crosstalk disturber is then used to perform crosstalk cancellation and spectrum management in a DSL system.

    • A telephony device includes a rectifier bridge (GB) intended to be connected to a telephone line and to supply a rectified line current, an interface module (INT) permitting the transmission of signals in the direction of the telephone line and supplying an information signal (Iin), and an amplifier (AGC) whose gain is proportional to the value of a control current (Icnt) supplied by a control module (CNT). The control current (Icnt) is proportional to an exponential of a linear equation of the inverse of the value of the information signal (Iin) in order to compensate for the attenuation which the signal has undergone during its transport through the telephone line. The control module is formed by a translinear module (TRL) which receives the input signal (Iin) and produces a translinear current (Itr) whose value may be expressed in the form of a linear equation of the inverse value of the input signal (Iin), and an exponential module (EXP) which receives the translinear current (Itr) and produces the control current (Icnt) whose value may be expressed as proportional to an exponential of the value of the translinear current (Itr).

    • A circuit for, and method of, reducing cross-coupled interference between first and second telephone lines of a multi-line telephone instrument and a telephone instrument containing the same. The circuit includes: (1) a first differential input amplifier having first tip and ring inputs coupled to conductors of the first telephone line and first tip and ring shunt resistors coupling the first tip and ring inputs to a signal reference of the telephone instrument and (2) a second differential input amplifier having second tip and ring inputs coupled to conductors of the second telephone line and second tip and ring shunt resistors coupling the second tip and ring inputs to the signal reference, the first and second tip and ring shunt resistors decreasing a common mode input resistance of the first and second differential input amplifiers, thereby attenuating cross-coupled interference common to both of the first and second telephone lines. The circuit and method may further be suitably employed to reduce the effects of common mode interference in other telephone instruments, including, but not limited to, single-line telephone instruments.
