    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for finding a length of a curve created to be displayed on an output device interactively and directly. A processor may specify the curve from input signals generated by an input device in response to direct control by a user. An apparatus may include a pointer for inputting points along a path-defined curve. A processor outputs to an output device certain rendering data for rendering an image of the curve in real time for feeding back to a user. The user may augment (edit, extend) the curve by moving the pointer to add input points to the curve, based on the image fed back. The apparatus and method provide a curve length for determining goodness of fit of a curve for rendering the interactive image to be viewed by a user. The fitted curve is rendered on an output device and fed back immediately to a user in constant time, regardless of the number of points accommodated by the curve as the user adapts the curve by moving the pointer to add inputs.

    • A data structure representation of an image called an image structure map (ISM) accurately and explicitly represents the geometry, topology and signal properties of regions in an original image and allows for efficient and accurate spatial indexing of the image and those regions. The ISM may serve as the basis for an image interaction system in which a user interacts with a rendered view of an original image that is produced from the ISM data structure. The rendered view of the original image represents the geometry and topology of the original image as represented in the ISM. The user interacts with the rendered view to make alterations to, or to query, the structures in the ISM. The user may also modify the ISM by interacting directly with a displayed view of the original image. The user may further invoke automatic operations to be performed using the original image data structure that produce image region data, such as signal property descriptors and boundary data, that may be used to modify the ISM. An image interaction system implemented in this manner takes full advantage of automatic computation methods to capture the geometric and topological properties of an image while permitting a user to employ human perceptual skills to augment the automatic operations. An illustrated implementation of the system uses an ISM having the form of a vertical cell decomposition that is mathematically robust, topologically consistent with the original image and is able to be modified dynamically--that is, without recomputing the entire ISM when a change is made.

    • Disclosed is an aesthetic imaging system (20) for use in editing digital images. The aesthetic imaging system includes an imaging program(21) that runs on a personal computer (28) having an image capture board (30), a monitor (32), a video source (34) for providing digital images to be edited by the aesthetic imaging system, and a pen and tablet 38 for use in editing the images. The imaging program includes a unique combination draw tool that includes a freehand draw mode, a curve mode and an undo mode that are available without cycling through menus. The combination draw tool may be used with any of the draw tools. Another feature of the imaging program is autoblend, a rectangular user interface that is invoked by each of the shape tools. The autoblend interface simplifies editing when using shape tools by consolidating the move, paste and blend, and paste without blending commands into a single, convenient interface.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling and displaying the image information presently seen by the image capture device together with those images which have been captured and stored upon actuation of the device. In a preferred embodiment, a viewfinder window is located in a capture device window. The capture device window also includes a variety of push buttons, some of which control the image capture device, others of which control the way in which the captured images are displayed on the computer screen. In response to the user command to capture an image, the image will be displayed adjacent to the image capture window. As the user continues to capture images, the frames are displayed as long as the computer has adequate temporary storage. Means to discard some images are also included in the user interface. Preferably, the discarded images are retained to allow the maximum reversibility of decisions to the discard images. The user interface also allows the user to stack a set of images into a single object in the workspace. Images may be manipulated within the stack, discarded or modified or changed between stacks of image objects.

    • The present invention provides an expert system for suggesting and providing graphic design selections based on a user's desired result. The invention provides a plurality of descriptors to define the characteristics of an output page or document. A user can "scale" or "weight" the descriptors, as desired. The present invention utilizes the weighted descriptors to select a number of solutions from a predefined database of possible solutions. The "fit" of each database solution to the user criteria is determined via an intelligent search. Initially, solutions that do not satisfy rejection constraints are identified and eliminated. These rejection constraints are binary constraints and may be the result of output device limitation, intended audience, environment of use, availability of color, etc. The elimination of solutions that do not meet the rejection constraints reduces the population of possible solutions, simplifying further researches and analysis. The solution process then compares a vector generated by the user scaled descriptors to vectors that define the possible solutions based on the same descriptors. A plurality of levels of closeness of fit are described. A user can "step through" all solutions within a particular range of fit.
