    • The present invention relates to providing services for circuit-switched calls from an Internet Protocol (IP) based packet network. In essence, a call originating from or intended for a subscriber that is served by a telephony switch, such as an end office or mobile switching center, in a circuit-switched network is intercepted and routed by the telephony switch to a service node via a subscriber emulator. The subscriber emulator acts as a liaison between the telephony switch of the circuit-switched network and the service node of the packet network. Preferably, the subscriber emulator presents itself to the service node as a user agent, which acts on behalf of a subscriber that is served the telephony switch. The service node provides any requisite processing of the call to implement services for the call.

    • The present invention allows originating endpoints to obtain reachability information from a directory service, which collects contact and related information from available users. When initiating a peer-to-peer communication session to an endpoint of a destination user, the originating endpoint will access the directory service to obtain reachability information for the destination user. The reachability information may contain one or more addresses, one of which will be a peer-to-peer communication session address. From the reachability information, the originating terminal will determine an appropriate address to initiate communications with the destination user. The reachability information may identify multiple addresses, where only certain of the addresses may be peer-to-peer communication addresses and other addresses may be used to establish other types of sessions through disparate types of networks.

    • When a caller initiates a call to a mobile terminal that is served by visited switch, information is provided to the caller based on the temporary directory number assigned to the mobile terminal by the visited switch. The information provided to the caller may relate to the location of the mobile terminal, include call processing options for the caller, or a combination thereof. When call processing options are provided, the caller may select an option and have the call processed accordingly. For example, the call processing options may include being routed to voicemail, a third party, or the originally called party. Other criteria may be used to assist in selecting the information to provide to the caller, such as the identification of the caller, the time, date, or differences in time zones between the home and visited networks.

    • The present invention allows a mobile terminal to automatically log on to an access network, and potentially log on to an entity on the access network or associated network based on the communication zone from which communications are afforded. The mobile terminal can detect one or more available access points associated with one or more communication zones and determine the most appropriate communication zone to use when obtaining network access. Based on the selected communication zone, the mobile terminal will obtain logon information from a logon profile. The logon information will provide sufficient information to allow the mobile terminal to obtain network access via the appropriate access point. Additional logon information may be provided for logging on to a network entity once network access is afforded.
