    • The present invention provides a session filter associated with an element to be protected in a communication network. Session requests intended for the protected element are processed by the session filter prior to being forwarded to the protected element. The protected element or a device associated therewith will provide event information indicative of undesirable session conditions, such as an overload condition, which necessitates a reduction or stoppage of incoming session requests for the protected element. The session filter will directly or indirectly receive the event information and take steps to reduce or stop the session requests being sent to the protected element. The session filter may filter the incoming session requests for the protected element and selectively send select session requests to the protected element, as well as send system protection responses to minimize the number of new session requests to devices generating or forwarding the incoming session requests.

    • The present invention provides a service node, which extends the services of a carrier's multimedia subsystem (MS), such as an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), to enterprise networks in an efficient and effective manner. As such, MS subscribers gain access to enterprise services in addition to the carrier's services provided via the carrier's circuit switched subsystems (CS) and packet subsystems (PS). The service node acts as a liaison between enterprise application servers and the MS, such that the enterprise application servers appear as MS application servers to the MS. The service node provides user identifier and protocol translation between enterprise and MS user identifiers and protocols, respectively. As such, enterprise application servers can access the MS as well as be accessed by the MS to support user mobility, with continuity of services, between the enterprise and carrier networks.

    • The present invention moves service control, including call control, for a user element from any number of subsystems to a multimedia subsystem (MS). Call control for originating or terminating a call in any subsystem as well as transferring the call between user elements is anchored at a continuity control function (CCF) in the MS. A call may be transferred by the CCF from a first user element to a second user element in the same or different subsystems upon receiving a request from the second user element. A user may invoke a transfer from the first user element to the second user element by having the second user element send an appropriate request to the CCF. The request may be provided to the CCF by initiating a call from the second user element that is intended for the CCF, when the call with the first user element is active.
