    • An apparatus and method for carrier frequency synchronization in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system are provided for correcting an initial carrier frequency offset in the OFDM system. A metric generator for frequency estimation performs a first accumulation process for a value computed by multiplying a Phase Reference Symbol (PRS) generated from a reception stage by a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) output signal for an OFDM symbol in a PRS position within a frame, acquires a differential symbol from a product of adjacent FFT output symbols, performs a second accumulation process for a real part extracted from the differential symbol, and outputs a metric value for the frequency estimation. A maximal value-related index generator compares metric values for initial frequency estimation within a predetermined frequency offset estimation range, and selects and outputs a maximal metric value as a frequency offset estimate.

    • This invention relates to a turbo decoding apparatus and method for a communication system. A high-rate memory buffer operating at the same frequency as a turbo decoder is arranged between a memory buffer of a receiver and the turbo decoder. The decoding apparatus reads data bits stored in the memory buffer of the receiver via the high-rate memory buffer, delays the read data bits for a time required in the turbo decoder, and then applies the delayed data bits to a Soft-In Soft-Out (SISO) decoder of the turbo decoder. The memory buffer of the receiver outputs data bits at an operating frequency or clock of the turbo decoder.

    • A mobile station apparatus and method provide for receiving packet data transmitted over a packet data channel, decoding the received packet data and delivering the decoded packet data to an upper layer in a mobile communication system transmitting packet data transmitted over a forward packet data channel and transmitting, over a forward packet data control channel, demodulation and decoding information of packet data transmitted over the forward packet data channel. The apparatus and method comprise a fast turbo decoder for decoding packet data received over the packet data channel depending on information received over the forward packet data control channel, storing the decoded data, and outputting buffer information of the stored data; an output buffer for storing the received packet data, and outputting the packet data upon receiving a read request. The apparatus and method further comprise an output buffer controller for receiving information on the decoded data and the buffer information from the fast turbo decoder, and generating an interrupt signal and a read address for reading data stored in the output buffer using the received data information and buffer information; and a processor for reading data stored in the output buffer according to the read address upon receiving the interrupt signal from the output buffer controller.
