The mixture of the dispersion and the cross-linking agent is stable, and cross-linking will start only when the mixture is applied to a substrate such as a fiber.

Preferred articles bearing such a coating are prepared by: applying a base coat to a substrate and curing the same; vapor depositing a coating of a metal over the surface of the base coat; and applying to and curing on the surface of the base coat; and applying to and curing on the surface of the deposited metal the radiation polymerizable topcoat, preferably with little or no pigment contained therein.

    • A thermosetting resin composition having improved properties as an electrical insulating material and being particularly suited for use in printed circuit boards, consists essentially of an acryloyloxyl- or methacryloyloxyl- terminated butadiene homopolymer or copolymer, for example, with acrylonitrile or styrene, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer capable of copolymerizing with the terminating acryloyloxyl or methacryloyloxyl groups of the butadiene homopolymer or copolymer, and an acid anhydride containing at least one ethylenically unsaturated group in its molecule. In preferred compositions of the invention, there are from 1.5 to 3.0 terminating acryloyloxyl or methacryloyloxyl groups per molecule of the butadiene homopolymer or copolymer, and the amounts of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer and of the acid anhydride are from 50 to 200 weight percent and from 5 to 20 weight percent, respectively, based on the weight of the terminated butadiene homopolymer or copolymer. A particularly desirable composition is obtained when the acryloyloxyl- or methacryloyloxyl-terminated polymer or copolymer is at least 70 weight percent 1,2-polybutadiene.

    • A process is disclosed for preparing a polyacrylate-modified polyvinyl chloride processing aid for polyvinyl chloride by sequentially polymerizing the vinyl chloride and the desired acrylate ester monomer. Thus, a conventional vinyl chloride suspension polymerization is conducted at a controlled rate of agitation and in the presence of a specified concentration of suspending agent and is then halted at or near its completion; unreacted vinyl chloride monomer is removed, a minor proportion of an acrylate ester monomer, e.g., methyl methacrylate, which has been pre-mixed with a fresh supply of a free radical initiating catalyst is added and polymerization is resumed and continued until the acrylate ester monomer polymerizes in and/or on the particles of the previously polymerized polyvinyl chloride. The polyacrylate-modified PVC thereby recovered is an effective aid for processing conventional PVC, or it can be processed per se since it is suitable for calendering or extruding.

    • A radiation polymerizable protective coating composition or paint, coated articles bearing such a protective coating and processes for preparing such articles. The radiation polymerizable paint, on a non-polymerizable solvent, pigment, initiator and particulate filler-free basis consists essentially of a binder solution of: (1) an alpha-beta olefinically unsaturated organic resin containing between about 0.5 and about 5 units of olefinic unsaturation per 1,000 units of molecular weight; (2) a compound polymerizable with said resin upon exposure to ionizing radiation; and (3) between about 0.05 and about 1.0 parts per 100 parts of the total of said alpha-beta olefinically unsaturated resin and said compound polymerizable therewith of a mono-or diester of phosphoric acid bearing one or more sites of vinyl unsaturation. The composition exhibits excellent quality and good adhesion to a variety of substrates, in particular metals, including vapor deposited metals. Preferred articles bearing such a coating are prepared by: applying a base coat to a substrate and curing the same; vapor depositing a coating of a metal over the surface of the base coat; and applying to and curing on the surface of the deposited metal the radiation polymerizable topcoat, preferably with little or no pigment contained therein.
