    • A method of evaluating the signal conditions in a probe measurement network of the type having a plurality of separate measurement channels, where each channel communicates through a corresponding device-probing end. The method includes providing an assembly which includes a conductive planar probing area on the upper face of a base and a reference junction connected to the probing area by a high-frequency transmission structure. The method further includes placing the respective device-probing end of a first one of the measurement channels into contact with the planar probing area, transmitting a high-frequency signal through both the measurement channel and the reference junction and, thereafter, measuring the signal. This step is repeated for the other measurement channels and the signal conditions in the different channels are then evaluated by comparing the measured signals, where such evaluation is facilitated by maintaining, via the high-frequency transmission structure, a transmission line of substantially constant high-frequency transmission characteristic between each device-probing end coming into contact with the planar probing area and the reference junction.

    • A digital, DC voltage meter device utilized for metering electric power on a locomotive system. This invention will eliminate the need to use a hand held meter to perform these functions. The meter is permanently built into the Voltage test panel, replacing test receptacles with a large 7/10' LED display that can be read day or night. It is designed to operate in temperatures from -32 degrees Fahrenheit to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. A three position spring loaded switch returning to the off position is used to operate the meter. The present invention is a custom DC voltage meter that is capable of measuring two voltage ranges on a locomotive system; 0-1500 Volts ("V") for main generator voltage can be measured when the switch is in the top position; and 0-75 millivolts ("mV") for load test shunt millivoltage can be measured when the switch is in the bottom position. The meter is also capable of displaying the Dynamic Braking Voltage when the locomotive's dynamic brake is engaged.

    • An electric meter includes a housing, a switch positioned within an opening in the housing, a hinge pin having a first cross-sectional shape and being connected to the housing, and a switch cover having a passageway receiving the hinge pin therein and permitting pivotal movement of said switch cover between a closed position and an open position. The passageway has a second cross-sectional shape cooperating with the first cross-sectional shape of the hinge pin for locking the switch cover in the open position. The hinge pin preferably includes a generally cylindrical shaft and a ridge extending longitudinally thereon to define the first cross-sectional shape. Accordingly, the passageway of the switch cover is preferably defined by a generally cylindrical portion with a first longitudinally extending channel in communication therewith to define the second cross-sectional shape. The passageway may also include a second longitudinal channel cooperating with the ridge to lock the switch cover in the closed position.

    • A splay-free test probe for maintaining high conductivity is described. A matrix of electrical pins are molded into the side walls of a probe head. The side surfaces of the probe head are milled such that the longitudinally exposed surfaces of the exposed pins are flushed with the side surfaces of the probe head. The longitudinal exposed surfaces of the pins become the contact surfaces of the test probe. The width of the contact surfaces is less than 50% of the cross-sectional diameter of the pins. Notwithstanding repeated insertions, the test probe ensures splay-free performance. The contact surfaces around the tips of the stainless steel pins are milled at an angle with respect to plane of the side walls of the probe head to facilitate the probe head's entry into the IC socket. While the probe head is inserted into IC socket, the stainless steel contact surfaces of the probe head remove contaminants from the socket pins. In the process, the electrical contact between the IC sockets and the IC pins is improved. The test probe not only can be customized to any specification of IC sockets, but it also ensures that the cross-sectional dimension and electrical conductivity of the IC package is accurately and reliably simulated.

    • A digital instrument is represented by an analog-to-digital converter 17 controlled by a CPU 10 to effect measurements at regular intervals. The digital measurements are stored in a history file in a RAM 14, e.g. the most recent 100 or 500 measurements. The measurements are also linearly processed by rounding and range scaling to produce 100 reduced measurements in a second file in the RAM 14. This file is cyclically read out to a digital-to-analog converter 18 to produce a voltage on a terminal 22 for application to an oscilloscope which provides a display from which features of the measurements (e.g. a trend or a periodic component) can be seen. In order to allow for flyback and reset the 100 reduced measurements are held in a file of larger capacity (e.g. 130 or 150 measurements) which is cyclically read out. As the oldest of the 100 measurements is read a driver 19 provides a trigger pulse on a terminal 23 for the oscilloscope external trigger input. Various linear and non-linear algorithms for deriving the second file from the history file are described.
