    • In a digital tone synthesizer of a type using digital data representing the amplitudes of a predetermined fixed number of sample points along one cycle of the audio waveform of a musical tone and an oscillator controlling the sampling frequency as well as the pitch of the tone, a digital filter for transferring the digital data to a digital-to-analog converter at the sampling rate. The digital filter, in response to applied input coefficient values, operates as a low pass or high pass filter in which the cut-off frequency is a predetermined harmonic of the pitch frequency of the tone. By changing the coefficient values, the cut-off harmonic can be changed for a tone independently of the pitch of the tone. Thus any tone of the musical scale may be filtered to modify the harmonic content independently of the pitch of the tone.

    • An electronic musical instrument is of a harmonic synthesis type and is provided with an order number memory device which stores a plurality of order numbers of the harmonic components necessary to form respective tone colors, an amplitude coefficient memory device which stores a plurality of sets of amplitude coefficients for the respective harmonic components corresponding to the respective order of numbers stored in the order number memory device, and a tone color selector which controls the order number memory device and the amplitude coefficient memory device, when a certain tone color is selected, for causing the respective memory devices to produce the order numbers and the amplitude coefficients of a set corresponding to the selected tone color. According to the order numbers, respective harmonic component waves of a certain amplitude are produced and are multiplied with the amplitude coefficients and the multiplication products thus obtained are combined to synthesize musical tones having the selected tone color.By providing only necessary order numbers and coefficients, the memory size becomes small and the synthesizing speed becomes high.

    • In a musical instrument having one or more tone generators in which a plurality of data words corresponding to the amplitudes of a corresponding number of evenly spaced reference points defining the waveform of one cycle of an audio signal are transferred sequentially from a note register to a digital-to-analog converter in repetitive cycles at a rate proportional to the pitch of the tone being generated, apparatus is provided for adaptively computing the set of data points in response to values of preselected harmonic coefficients. The computation apparatus advances past all harmonic coefficients of smaller magnitude than a selected threshold thereby reducing the computation time and making the instrument capable of responding to time varying tonal changes.

    • A keyboard operated tone synthesizer with glissando effect in which actuating individual keys successively on a keyboard produces all the intermediate notes of the chromatic scale. The time interval between notes in the scale is independently controllable. In one modification of the invention the individual notes of the chromatic scale played during the glissando, when played slowly enough to be heard individually, can be controlled in attack, decay, sustain and release characteristics. The chromatic glissando can move either up or down the scale, depending upon the pitch of each key relative to the previous key played on the keyboard.

    • The production of musical notes containing anharmonic overtones is implemented in a computor organ of the type disclosed in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 225,883, filed Feb. 14, 1972, and now U.S. Pat. 3,809,786. In such an instrument, the sampled amplitudes of a musical waveshape are computed in real time by individually calculating the amplitude contributions of the Fourier components constituting the waveshape. In accordance with the present invention, certain of these Fourier components are evaluated at frequencies offset from multiples of the nominal fundamental frequency of the note being generated. This is accomplished by utilizing in the overtone amplitude calculations offset values Eta which establish the extent of anharmonicity of each overtone. This results in complete freedom of control of the anharmonicity of individual overtones. The overtone offset ( Eta ) values may be stored in a memory, or may be generated by appropriate circuitry. In certain embodiments the offset is proportional to the frequency of the note being produced, preferably being a constant number of cents. Other embodiments include, among other things, constant frequency offset independent of time, time variant anharmonicity, offset of alternate overtones in opposite frequency directions, and overtone selection to insure correct frequency of a subjective fundamental.
