    • There is provided a device and system for restraining detainees through devices attached to the detainees and configured to administer electrical shocks when certain predetermined conditions occur. Restraining devices may be activated by internal control systems or by external controllers that transmit activation signals to the restraining device. External controllers may be actuated by an external controlling entity such as a detention guard or other person or system, or may be controlled by an enabling signal sent by wired or wireless connections to the controller. There is also provided a system for detainee restraint where multiple detainees may be restrained collectively or individually in a controlled environment such as a detention facility, a jail, or a detainee transport vehicle.

    • An electro-stimulation device includes a pair of electrodes for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The electro-stimulation device both electrically arrests the heartbeat and stimulates the heartbeat. A pair of electrodes are provided for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The pair of electrodes may be connected to an intravenous catheter for transvenous stimulation of the appropriate nerve. A first switch is connected between a power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to augment any natural stimuli to the heart and thereby stop the heart from beating. A second switch is connected between the power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to provide an artificial stimulus to initiate heartbeating. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method for arresting the beat of a heart in a living body comprising the steps of connecting the pair of electrodes to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat and supplying an electrical current to the electrodes of sufficient amplitude and duration to arrest the heartbeat. The device may also serve to still the lungs by input to a respirator or by stimulation of the phrenic nerve during surgical procedures.

    • A cardiac simulation system with a patient warning apparatus, including a pin electrode insertable into a standard female socket in the header of a dual chamber pacer or multi-function cardiac stimulator. The cardiac stimulator has at least two sockets in a header, such as is commonly found in a dual chamber pacemaker. Rather than stimulating both chambers of the heart, the dual chamber pacemaker is programmed to function as a single chamber pacemaker, with a standard lead connecting one socket and its associated circuitry to a selected chamber of the heart, usually the ventricle. The pin electrode is inserted in the other socket, usually used for the sensing and stimulation of the atrium, and additional programming is provided to the pacemaker or stimulator to automatically produce an output stimulus through the atrial socket to the pin electrode whenever a condition exists requiring patient notification or warning. Our invention includes a specialized pin electrode with an orifice for a suture. The suture is anchored to excitable tissue in a secure fashion to assure contact of the electrode with the tissue and thus stimulation of the tissue.

    • An implantable atrial defibrillator cardioverts the atria of a patient's heart and determines the quantity of cardioverting electrical energy required for cardioverting the atria of the patient. The atrial defibrillator includes a detector for detecting atrial activity of the heart and an atrial fibrillation detector for determining when the atria of the heart are in fibrillation. A delivery stage is selectively operable in a test mode for applying fibrillation inducing electrical energy to the atria when the atria are not in fibrillation for inducing fibrillation. When fibrillation is induced, the delivery stage repeatedly applies test cardioversion electrical energy to the atria until the atria are cardioverted. Thereafter, a value indicative of the quantity of the test cardioversion energy last applied to the atria is stored for future reference when the atrial defibrillator is in a normal operating mode.
