    • A highly weather-resistant, single package, cross-linkable emulsion using an emulsion polymer (X) obtained by emulsion polymerization, in an aqueous medium, of polymerizable monomer ingredients (II) comprising (a) from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a polymerizable UV-ray stable monomer, (b) from 5 to 99.4% by weight of cycloalkyl group-containing polymerizable monomer, (c) from 0.5 to 40% by weight of a polymerizable monomer which contains the groups having reactivity with carboxyl groups and (d) from 0 to 94.4% by weight of other polymerizable monomer, in which the amount of the polymerizable monomers (a), (b), (c) and (d) in total is 100% by weight, by using a water soluble or water dispersible polymer (I) having a terminal alkyl group with an acid value of 200 or greater obtained by polymerizing a polymerizable monomer ingredient (A) containing an unsaturated carboxylic acid as an essential ingredient under the presence of an alkyl mercaptan of 6 to 18 carbon atoms. This emulsion provides a highly weather-resistant, single package, crosslinkable emulsion capable of forming a coating layer which rapidly dries to cure at the initial stage of coating, exhibits long lasting excellent water proofness and weather-resistance, and further, having satisfactory gloss retainability, shape retainability, chemical resistance, solvent resistance and so on.

    • A novel process for preparing an acrylic polymer containing a tertiary amino group which is not quaternized or not salt formed and having a high molecular weight, characterized by reacting an aqueous solution of an acrylic monomer containing a tertiary amino group with carbonic acid gas to generate an acrylic monomer containing a tertiary ammonium carbonate, homopolymerizing the obtained monomer or copolymerizing the obtained monomer with the other vinyl monomer copolymerizable with the obtained monomer to give a polymer containing a structural unit of a tertiary ammonium carbonate, and decarboxylating the polymer with heating and/or reducing the pressure is provided, and particularly, an article containing a water-soluble vinyl polymer which contains at least 5% by mole of the above-mentioned structural unit of a tertiary amino group and whose intrinsic viscosity [.eta.] is at least 1 dl/g is available as an excellent dewatering agent for sludge.

    • An aqueous polymerization method is disclosed for forming polymers containing, as polymerized units, at least one monomer having low water solubility, including the steps of:(1) complexing at least one monomer having low water solubility with a macromolecular organic compound having a hydrophobic cavity; and(2) polymerizing in an aqueous system from about 0.1% to about 100%, by weight of the monomer component, based on the total weight of the polymer, of the complexed monomer having low water solubility with from about 0% to about 99.9% by weight, based on the total weight of the polymer, of at least one monomer having high water solubility.The method is also useful for forming aqueous solution polymers having low water solubility. The method is useful for polymerizing, in an aqueous system, aqueous solution polymers or emulsion polymers, particularly random copolymers, of monomer having a low water solubility which heretofore could not be made satisfactorily without the addition of an organic solvent, comonomer or a high level of surfactant to aid in solubilizing the monomer having low water solubility. The method is also useful for improving the efficiency of chain transfer agents having low water solubility used in aqueous solution and emulsion polymerizations.
