    • A network includes a plurality of wall plates, each of the wall plates couples a network resource such as a computer or a network attached device to the network and includes an RFID circuit to detect proximate devices having an RFID tag. The proximate devices can be network attached devices or non network attached devices such as desks, phones, and artwork. Logic is included within each wall plate which includes wall plate physical location information. The logic is designed to respond to a broadcast signal. In so doing, the physical location of any resource can be determined. The physical location of all known resources are provided to an inventory application in the network, thereby allowing network administrators and users to remotely determine the physical location (room, floor, building, etc.) of any and all known resources attached to the network. Likewise, local computer users are able to identify the network resources located in their vicinity.

    • A data processing system and method including a docking station and a portable computer capable of being coupled to the docking station are disclosed for securing the docking station, the portable computer, and for securing the attachment of the docking station to the portable computer. The portable computer is coupled to the docking station. A disconnection password is established. When the portable computer is disconnected from the docking station, a user is prompted for the disconnection password. The portable computer is disabled in response to a failure to correctly enter the disconnection password, wherein the portable computer is inoperable without a correct entry of the disconnection password. When a portable computer is connected to the docking station, a correct entry of a connection password is required. In response to a failure to correctly enter the connection password, access to the docking station is prohibited. When the docking station is physically removed from its stationary support, correct entry of a relocation password is required. In response to a failure to correctly enter the password, access to the docking station is prohibited.

    • A security system for computers defines a control zone using radiation, preferably at radio frequency, having a distinctive characteristic, such as a particular frequency. The zone may be established, for example, at a door exit or other limited passage to a secured area. The radiation triggers a device in the computer that in turn sends out a serial number signal. To further prevent unauthorized removal a personal identification number is required of the person in the zone with the computer, either by key input or an encoded radio signal. A receiver located near the control zone applies the serial number to a table look up computer that triggers an emergency signal if a match to an authorized list of serial numbers for the computer and corresponding person does not occur. The emergency signal activates a transmitter that sends out an emergency radiation signal with a different distinctive characteristic. A second receiver in the computer then responds to the emergency radiation signal to trigger the security logic to render the computer inoperative.
